Job Description Electrical Machines Engineer Full Time Derby, Solihull or Bristol What you will be doing: We have an exciting opportunity for a Manufacturing Services Leader to provide Manufacturing Services support within the team in our operations facility in Inchinnan. You will be accountable for the performance and results of your team, providing leadership and identifying the need for coaching for maintenance teams within the facility. The right candidate will be an experienced manager who is able to operate within defined manufacturing services and other standards and policies. You will be confident in making decisions and problem solving, guided by policies, procedures and plans for their area. Whilst also addressing resource and operational challenges adapting plans and priorities to set the direction for their team and fulfil the requirements of the role. Responsibilities: In this exciting role, you will require in-depth knowledge of various types of electrical rotating machines, design and analysis, design for manufacture and assembly, verification and manufacturing processes are important to the role as is utilisation of electrical machine modelling and design tools. Excellent organisational & communication skills are vital as the role may require working on multiple projects simultaneously, and will involve communicating across, upwards and downwards within the organisation, as well as: Electrical machine development including requirements definition, trade studies, design and analysis. Design of electrical machines, from low TRL prototype demonstrators through to production standards, covering powers ranging from a few kW to several MW. Contribute to a wide range of electrical technologies from high power density, high speed electrical machines through to key enabling technologies to facilitate high temperature, harsh environment operation. Develop, implement and validate power systems and sub-systems that integrate electrical machines operating in both generation and motoring applications, involving AC-AC / AC-DC and DC-DC conversion stages that will connect to a grid, aircraft system or other loads. Work with manufacturing engineers and the wider supply chain on Design for X (e.g. Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly, Design for Cost). Work with broader electrical team to develop complete power system requirements and solutions. Work with materials specialists to implement robust, well-understood solutions (e.g. insulation systems) into our machine designs for safe and reliable performance in challenging conditions. Produce clear, comprehensive product specifications, performance requirements and design documentation with input as necessary from mechanical, electrical and systems teams, as well as partners and suppliers as appropriate. Rig / laboratory testing of experimental systems with hardware or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL). Contribute to the maturity of Rolls-Royce’s electrical machine’s capability, including design and analysis process development and test facility development. Why Rolls-Royce? Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Chartered Engineer status preferred. Significant experience in designing electrical machines for power generation systems for aerospace or similar adjacent industries (e.g. automotive). Experience or working appreciation of interfacing electrical components, including: inverters, energy storage devices, drives and powertrains. Experience with various types of electrical machine, with a good working knowledge of different machine types including Permanent Magnet, Switched Reluctance, Wound Field and Induction machines, with an understanding of the benefits and limitations of each machine type. Experienced in the use of electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical design packages for electrical machine design, including: Lower fidelity modelling tools such as MotorCAD. 2D and 3D electromagnetic and multiphysics FEA packages, for example COMSOL or ANSYS Maxwell. Optimisation tools such as iSight or Optislang is beneficial. An appreciation of electrical system analysis tools such as MATLAB/SIMULINK, PSPICE etc. Experience in writing technical documents such as: design reports, interface documents, procurement & test specification and electrical schematics. Familiarisation with aerospace certification standards, for example CS-25, CS-E, DO160, is beneficial. Excellent communication skills (i.e., verbal, written, and presentation) to both expert and non-expert audiences.
