We are looking to expanding our Pharmacy Technician Team due to the increased workload. You will work closely with other other 2 Pharmacy Technicians, PCN Pharmacists, the GPs and our wide GP Practice Teams to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines as well as support our patients to make best use of their medicines. You will already be registered with the GPhC and practicing safely and effectively at all times.
Main duties of the job
The Pharmacy Technician supports safe, effective, and cost-efficient prescribing within the practice by managing medication records, processing repeat prescriptions, and ensuring accuracy following hospital discharges. They work closely with the multidisciplinary team to monitor high-risk medicines, respond to drug safety alerts, and liaise with pharmacies, patients, and care homes.
The role also involves auditing prescribing practices, implementing national and local guidelines, improving medicines optimisation, and reducing waste. Additionally, the technician contributes to quality improvement initiatives, supports patient safety processes, and helps maintain compliance with legal and professional standards while keeping up to date with current prescribing guidance.
About us
Orchard Medical Practice is a large NHS GP Practice based within the grounds of Mansfield Community Hospital, serving around 20,000 patients. We provide a wide range of primary care services, including GP consultations, chronic disease management, minor surgery, immunisations, and health clinics.
Currently we have 5 GP Partners, 6 Salaried GPs, large nursing & admin teams as well as 2 established Pharmacy Technicians.
Job responsibilities
Thefollowing are the core responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician. There may be, on occasion, a requirement tocarry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workloadand staffing levels
Work with the multi-disciplinary team inaccordance with practice policies to improve the safety and quality ofprescribing within the practice
To update and maintain accurate patientmedication records on the practice clinical computer system, including advicegiven and action taken
To manage repeat prescription requests,resolving queries where possible and producing prescriptions for clinicalreview and signature
To provide drug alternatives where original products may be out ofstock. When appropriate and within staff competencies
On receipt of discharge summaries or clinicletters make or check changes made to medicines after authorisation by a GP,in accordance with practice protocols.
Run reports and carry out audits ofprescribing and implement agreed changes
Contribute to the monitoring of high riskmedicines including DMARDs in accordance with practice protocols and localshared care protocols
Tidying repeat medication lists including synchronisingdurations and removing medications not ordered within a defined period
Support the practice with reviewing repeatprescribing systems to ensure safe and high quality prescribing
Liaise with community and hospital pharmacieson the supply of drugs where necessary & give advice to the practice teamand patients
Responsible person(s) on the response to MHRAdrug safety alerts, supported by other members of the clinical team wherenecessary
To attend clinical meetings with clinicians toreport any shortages in medication/drug safety alerts and present anyrelevant significant events.
Assist in the delivery of medicines optimisation andmanagement incentive
schemes and patient safety audits
Support the implementation of national prescribingpolicies and guidance within GP practices, care homes and other primary caresettings. This will be achieved through undertaking clinical audits (e.g.,use of antibiotics), supporting quality improvement measures and contributingto the Quality and Outcomes Framework and enhanced services
Work with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficientmedicines optimisation, including implementing efficient ordering and returnprocesses, and reducing wastage
Be aware of duties and responsibilities regarding currentlegislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on SafeguardingAdults and Safeguarding Children
Participate in clinical audits and research projects andimplements changes as required, including supporting with the development,and updating of practice protocols / guidelines and procedures locally
Support in the management of patient complaints whenrequested to do so and participate in the identification of any necessarylearning brought about through incidents and near-miss events
Respond to queries from patients, care homestaff and pharmacies regarding medicines, within your competency.
Support and participate in shared learningacross the practice and wider health care community
Keep up to date with Nottinghamshire APCmedicines formulary and local and national prescribing guidelines to adviseGPs and the wider practice team
Comply with legal and professionalrequirements, good practice and ensure safe systems of work and prescribing
Contribute to QOF, enhanced services andprescribing engagement schemes as advised by the practice pharmacist orPartners
Undertake projects, services and initaitivesto improve the safety, quality and cost effectiveness of prescribing
Work with the ICB medicines management team toimprove the quality and safety of prescribing
Use data and tools to analyse and reviewprescribing patterns within the practice as required by the PCN Pharmacistsor Partners.
Supporting care home Multi-disciplinarymeetings for our allocated care homes with the GP and care home staff
Issue prescriptions for HRT in line withspecific parameters provided by GP Partners, following an appropriate review
To attend and occasionally chair meetings withthe Prescription team, including with other Technicians and PrescriptionClerks
To attend PCN learning afternoons when workinghours allow
When new patients join the Practice,medication is to be added back to repeat prescription. This requiresinvestigation of notes from previous Practice(s) and checking monitoringrequirements

* Training requirements are currently in transition and further information is available at GPhC
