Role: Laboratory Technician
Location: Edinburgh East (Seafield – Scientific Services)
Working Hours: 08:30 – 17:00 (36 hours per week) – typical days off are Thursday and Friday
Pay Rate: £16.07 per hour
Duration: Temporary, ongoing
Start Date: ASAP
About the Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build or develop a career in laboratory science, particularly within microbiology. You’ll gain hands-on experience working in a professional lab environment, supporting essential testing processes that contribute to public health and safety.
Working as part of a collaborative microbiology team, you’ll play a key role in ensuring samples are prepared, processed, and recorded accurately while maintaining high laboratory standards.
Key Responsibilities
In this varied and practical role, your duties will include:
Preparing food and water samples for microbiological testing
Accurately recording data and maintaining laboratory records
Organising and transferring samples to appropriate storage areas
Monitoring and maintaining stock levels (glassware, chemicals, consumables)
Cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment, benches, and workspaces
Ensuring safe disposal of samples in line with procedures
Supporting the wider team to meet testing deadlines and service targets
Assisting with general laboratory operations and additional tasks as required
Providing occasional delivery/collection support for samples if needed
What We’re Looking For
We’re more interested in your attitude and approach than extensive experience. The ideal candidate will have:
A degree in Microbiology or a related scientific discipline (preferred but not essential)
Previous laboratory experience (preferred but not required)
Strong attention to detail and a methodical working style
Good organisational and record-keeping skills
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
A proactive, reliable attitude and willingness to learn
Flexibility to work weekends as part of a 5-day rota (essential)
