Job Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join our highly motivated, friendly and dynamic pleural team who are dedicated to delivering patient-centred, high-quality care to meet the needs of our population.
This is a 1 year, fixed term, senior clinical fellow (ST4+) post in pleural medicine based at the North Bristol NHS Trust. The post will provide 12 months of dedicated sub-speciality experience in Pleural Disease and would be suited to a Respiratory Trainee as out-of-programme experience during specialist training or as post-CCT experience. Alternatively, applications would be welcomed from candidates able to perform at registrar level, who are in possession of full MRCP(UK) or equivalent, and who may be contemplating a career in respiratory medicine.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be an integral member of the pleural clinical team, providing in-reach advice for inpatients, undertaking and coordinating the admission avoidance and routine outpatient clinics, training in advanced pleural procedures (IPC, ultrasound guided biopsy and thoracoscopy), alongside attending multidisciplinary team meetings and supporting the diagnosis and care for patients with pleural disease.
The job includes contributing to the general medicine registrar rota (including ward cover, the acute medical take, nights, evening shifts and weekends).

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

* Being a fully integrated member of the Pleural team
* Ward in-reach advice for patients with pleural pathologies
* Undertaking supervised outpatient clinics and admission avoidance clinics
* Training in advanced pleural procedures (IPC, ultrasound guided biopsy, thoracoscopy and advanced pleural ultrasound)
* Attending multi-disciplinary team meetings (pleural and mesothelioma MDTs)
* Support education and training of resident doctors and allied health care professionals.
* Actively participate in audit, quality improvement and research relevant to the work of the respiratory department.
Person Specification, Essential Criteria
* Full registration with the GMC.
* ALS accreditation
* MRCP or equivalent
* MSSB or equivalent
* Recent experience working as a doctor in the NHS (or equivalent) within the last 2 years
* Minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience
* Recent experience of working as a medical registrar
* Primary operator BTS thoracic ultrasound qualification (or equivalent)
* Competence and independence to undertake pleural aspirations and chest drain insertions
* Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career
* Experience of completing audit and/or quality improvement
* Proven teaching ability
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
* Formal, proven teaching ability and experience
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Evidence of good team work, including ability to lead, form effective working relationships and support staff development.
* Ability to work independently, as part of the medicine division.
* Ability to work with professionalism and prioritise patient safety
* Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments

Essential criteria
* MBBS or equivalent
* Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
* Advanced life support (ALS) accreditation
* MRCP (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
* Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
Training And Experience
Essential criteria
* Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
* Minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience including 4 years in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
* Primary operator BTS thoracic ultrasound qualification (or equivalent)
* Competence and independence to undertake pleural aspirations and chest drain insertions.
Desirable criteria
* Registrar grade experience in respiratory medicine
* Evidence of specific skills, training or experience of pleural disease
