Overview
A well-established UK-based organisation operating within a security-sensitive sector is seeking a proactive and technically skilled Software Applications & Database Support Engineer.
This role is responsible for supporting, enhancing, and developing internal software applications and databases, ensuring operational efficiency, data integrity, and a high standard of service delivery across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Provide development and ongoing support for software applications, databases, and reporting solutions.
Diagnose and resolve software incidents across multiple business systems.
Administer ERP and bespoke internal applications, including user access management.
Develop and maintain in-house systems aligned with defined business requirements.
Monitor Service Desk activity and ensure timely resolution of logged incidents.
Accurately record, update, and document requests using the IT service desk system.
Maintain IT security documentation and ensure systems remain compliant and secure.
Identify and remediate security vulnerabilities, applying patches where required.
Ensure software licensing compliance at all times.
Contribute to forward planning for infrastructure capacity and availability based on business needs.
Support business continuity and disaster recovery planning to ensure system resilience.
Provide system support to underpin financial and operational processes.
Technical Skills & Experience
Essential
Strong understanding of programming languages and database technologies, including:
VB.Net (current systems)
C# and/or ASP.Net (future development)
SQL Server (management and T-SQL coding)
Oracle Database (management and PL/SQL coding)
Experience diagnosing and resolving application-level incidents.
Good understanding of database administration principles.
Desirable
Experience with ERP systems (e.g., IFS or similar).
SAP Crystal Reports experience.
Knowledge of MS Office (Excel/macros – VB6 based).
Experience with Atlassian Jira and Confluence.
Qlik Sense development experience.
Novacura Flow development experience.
Basic understanding of Microsoft networks and Active Directory.
Some exposure to Linux environments.
Knowledge of HMG accreditation processes within the Defence sector.
Experience designing and documenting ISO 27001-compliant systems and procedures.
Qualifications
Essential
GCSE Grade A–C/9–4 in Maths, English, and a Computing-related subject (or equivalent).
Computing Diploma or equivalent qualification.
Desirable
Degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) in a Computing-related discipline.
Additional Requirements
Full UK driving licence.
Willingness to travel to alternative UK sites (and occasionally overseas).
Flexibility to undertake out-of-hours work when required to support business operations
