We maintain rigorously high standards of quality, whilst also delivering efficiencies to healthcare through careful workforce planning, pioneering technology and significant investment in infrastructure and IT.
About the role:
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Specialist Biomedical Scientist for a full time role within the Department of Clinical Parasitology in Central London to meet the demands of our growing department.
The successful applicant will join our small, friendly specialist reference unit delivering a varied parasitology service out of the Halo building, HSL’s flagship laboratory. The department operates a standard working day of 7.5 hours (generally 09:00 to 17:30,) Monday to Friday.
The Department of Clinical Parasitology serves as a national reference centre offering expert diagnosis and identification on human parasites and the diseases they cause. The department services requests from users worldwide. In the UK, these users include general practitioners, PHE and medical laboratories in the NHS and the independent sector.
We offer an extensive portfolio of diagnostic investigations including microscopy, culture, immunological and nucleic acid based procedures. This portfolio includes many specialist techniques specific to this department.
We constantly seek to develop, evaluate and advise upon new parasite diagnostic techniques, a role greatly facilitated by our extensive archive of diagnostic specimens that can be used in the development and validation of assays. Recent collaborations include the development of the first CE marked LAMP based nucleic acid test for malaria with the Foundation for Innovative and New Diagnostics (FIND) and the development of a molecular EQA scheme for malaria diagnosis with both WHO and UKNEQAS
The ideal candidate will be committed to and have a genuine interest in Parasitology and want to expand their knowledge further. It is a rewarding opportunity while providing a learning platform which could be considered as an insight into furthering your career. The candidate must be HCPC Registered with a Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent. The candidate will have the opportunity to rotate around our serology, microscopy and molecular sections, gaining expertise, carrying out a diverse range of diagnostic techniques and directly observing parasites rarely seen outside of tropical locations.
Previous laboratory experience in serology or molecular processes would be beneficial as many of our assays are manual in nature, rather than automated. Training will be given in our processes.
