Health Care Assistant - Castle Health Centre

The post holder works under indirectsupervision of the practice nurse team leader and undertakes task and dutiesdelegated by the practice nurse team leader or a suitably qualified regulated professional.They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needsof patients, following policy and procedures can provide supervision to practicephlebotomist as required.


Main duties of the job

About us

IntraHealth is one of the UKs leadingprovider of NHS Primary and Community Care services. We serve a range of patientsacross our three divisions of Primary Care (general practice), Pharmacy andClinical Services which includes anticoagulation monitoring, patient medicationreviews and childhood immunisation programmes.

We also provide management and clinicalsupport to other GP practices and NHS bodies. We are a well-establishedorganisation having provided NHS services since 1999. Our team is made up ofGPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs), nurses, pharmacists, Health CareAssistants (HCAs) and local administration teams supported by a centralisedback office function; providing finance, HR, administration and data analysissupport.

We operate NHS services across the NorthEast, North West and Yorkshire.


Job responsibilities

Handwashing

Collectionand handling of laboratory specimens

Segregationand disposal of waste materials

Decontaminationof instruments and clinical equipment

Reportingand treatment of sharps injuries

Dealingwith blood and body fluid spillage

Assistpatients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measure

Understand and apply the principles of the coldchain

Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal ofvaccines and drugs within area of responsibility

Know the general principles of first aid andresuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate

Be aware of statutory child health procedures, andstatutory local guidance and referral criteria

Know the health and safety policies and procedureswithin the workplace, including fire procedures, maintaining documentation,monitoring and maintaining of equipment and furniture within your area ofresponsibility

Use the computer monitor safely

Be able to identify the risks to health ofmicrobiological and chemical hazards within the working environment accordingto the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

Be awareof and, if appropriate, assist in current clinical audit

Work withcolleagues in the team on the development of current and new servicesand other initiative

Deal withrequests from patients and clinical staff for health informationleaflets

Alertother team members to issues of quality and risk in the care of patients

Ensureown actions are consistent with clinical governance systems

Practicein accordance with agreed standards of care

Enablepatients to access appropriate professionals in the team

Ensurestock items under your control are ordered and available in thetreatment and consulting rooms

Know howclinical governance affects the HCA role and bring to the attention ofmore senior staff any specific risk situation

Know thepractice's policies, especially the whistle-blowing policy, available inthe practice staff handbook

Urinalysis and preparation of specimens forinvestigation by the pathology laboratory

Measuring and recording following physiologicalmeasurements in routine presentations

Visual Activity

Venepuncture, BM

ECG

Health Promotion

Act as a Chaperone

Prepare and maintain environments and equipmentbefore, during and after patient care interventions

Assist in raising awareness of health andwell-being, and how it can be promoted

Give accurate and appropriate information topatients and groups within own competence

Support and monitor patients during nebulisationtherapy

Informationprocess

Recordinformation and activities undertaken with patients and carers in anaccurate and timely fashion using manual or computer systems asappropriate

Inputsaccurate Read codes about patients to ensure accurate retrieval ofinformation for monitoring and auditing processe

Maintainconfidentiality or information relating to patients, relatives, staffand the practice

Take thenecessary precautions when transmitting information

Person Specification


Skills and Abilities

* Demonstrates a basic understanding of the needs of the patient and the role of the HCA
* Willing to develop clinical skills and competency relevant to the role e.g. phlebotomy skills
* Manual dexterity and manipulation skills
* Ability to handle simple medical equipment e.g. ECG machine
* Fitness to do the job within manual-handing policy
* Able to communicate routine information that requires tact and persuasive skills, or where there may be barriers to understanding
* Ability to communicate effectively via telephone or group discussion
* Good interpersonal skills
* Participate in the care of equipment
* Undertake stock control
* Must either be Hepatitis B immune or be willing to undergo an immunisation course
* Reliable
* Understand issues regarding accountability
* Demonstrate an understanding of the data protection act and patient confidentiality, clinical and information governance and Caldicott requirements.


Experience

* Has customer care experience or experience of being a carer.
* Experience of working unsupervised.
* Willingness to complete NVQ 2 or 3 in a related subject.


Qualifications

* Basic literacy and numeracy skills
* Basic computer experience
* Have the Care certificate or willing to undertake it.
* Experience in phlebotomy.
* Willingness to undertake an NVQ or an equivalent qualification
