Our Health & Safety team protects over 600 stores, 4 distribution hubs, 4 scientific research institutes, multiple events, and 2 head offices across the UK. The team manages accidents, incidents, and compliance with regulations and best practices.
Responsibilities
* Lead, own, manage, and govern the organisation‑wide Health, Safety & Welfare Strategy & Framework.
* Build and maintain shared understanding and ownership of safety practices across all activities and directorates.
* Act as Cancer Research UK’s designated ‘competent person’ under the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, providing expert guidance, leadership, and support for legal compliance.
* Develop, maintain, and monitor the health & safety management system, ensuring it remains fit for purpose.
* Oversee safe systems of work, risk assessments, policies, training, communications, monitoring, assurance, and reporting; ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation.
* Lead, develop, and motivate a team of 3‑4 direct reports, fostering stakeholder relationships and driving continuous improvement.
* Deliver the annual operating plan, including hazard and risk identification, supplier due diligence, accident and incident management, budgeting, reporting, and health & safety forums.
* Provide professional advice and support by partnering with internal stakeholders and external third parties.
* Exercise sound judgment to make timely decisions, escalate issues and provide strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
* Provide management information, data analysis, trends, and action recommendations to the Head of Assurance and senior stakeholders.
* Take on additional tasks to support the wider Health & Safety team, Assurance department, and CRUK’s strategy.
Qualifications
* NEBOSH Diploma level+ qualified Health & Safety Manager with experience in large, complex, hybrid organisations.
* Expert knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and best practices across diverse environments.
* Demonstrated ability to build credible, collaborative cross‑functional relationships and influence senior leaders.
* Strong prioritisation and organisational skills, with a track record of working independently and delivering high‑quality outcomes.
* Proactive problem‑solving mindset and continuous improvement focus.
* Experience in line or matrix management, coaching and driving high performance.
* Teamwork and senior leadership collaboration, contributing to collective success.
* Leadership skills with experience influencing stakeholders in driving change and compliance.
* Occasional travel across the UK on an ad‑hoc basis.
