Overview
The Scottish Agricultural Wages Board (SAWB) is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body established under the Agricultural Wages (Scotland) Act 1949. Its role is to make statutory Orders fixing minimum wage rates, holiday entitlement and other terms and conditions of service for workers in agriculture in Scotland. The board’s orders are legally enforceable. The Scottish Government Rural Directorate investigates complaints about non-compliance and conducts random inspections as needed.
Independent Members
We are looking for two new independent members to the SAWB. The independent member’s primary role is to help workers’ and employers’ representatives on the board reach fair settlements on matters relating to agricultural wages and related terms and conditions. Independent board members should be able to suggest options, encourage constructive dialogue, and participate in board meetings. They may also chair working parties on specific topics.
Responsibilities
The main responsibilities include:
* Participating in board meetings and working parties
* Helping reach fair and reasonable settlements on matters relating to agricultural wages and conditions
* Challenging and presenting options and alternatives to inform negotiation
Role Criteria
Essential criteria include:
* Ability to listen and communicate effectively with a wide range of people
* Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively
* Ability to analyse and evaluate complex arguments and recognise implications
* Awareness of farming/rural issues
Optional but desirable: background in or awareness of apprenticeship schemes
Remuneration and Time Commitment
Remuneration is £180.00 per day, plus travel expenses where required. Time commitment is between 10 and 16 days per annum, with potential variation depending on demand.
