Your role and responsibilities As a Coroner’s Officer, you’ll be at the heart of Suffolk’s coronial investigations leading enquiries into sudden, unexplained and unnatural deaths and driving each case forward with purpose. Every day brings new challenges: gathering crucial evidence from witnesses and professionals, scrutinising medical records, coordinating identification processes, and piecing together detailed case files that stand up in court. You’ll work closely with police, medical experts, legal professionals and bereaved families as you guide each investigation from first report through to inquest. Alongside this, you’ll handle the unique responsibility of assessing and investigating potential treasure finds, ensuring every discovery is explored thoroughly and lawfully. It’s a role that places you at the centre of complex, sensitive and often fast‑moving enquiries where your actions directly support the delivery of a timely, thorough and compassionate coronial service. You will need proven experience of an organised and methodical approach to managing your workload, be an effective communicator and a diligent and responsible individual who is flexible, enthusiastic and resilient as you will be working in an environment that exposes you to upsetting and confidential material a sound knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook good understanding of data protection and data sharing legislation medical and legal knowledge and understanding, or previous experience working in a Coroner’s Court, is considered essential to uphold the service mission statement to ‘provide a caring and efficient service for the investigation of deaths in a sensitive, thorough and timely manner’.
