Area Planning Manager Permanent Grade 6 - £54,495- £64,811 Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review Working 36.5 hours per week About the Role We are seeking an experienced planning professional to lead planning management activity within a designated area of the city. As Area Planning Manager, you will oversee the delivery of planning services, manage a team of professional staff, and ensure planning decisions support sustainable development and regeneration. This role combines leadership, technical planning expertise and stakeholder engagement to ensure planning applications, policies and regeneration initiatives are delivered efficiently and in line with Council priorities. What You’ll Be Doing Lead and manage a Planning Management Team, ensuring planning applications and appeals are handled efficiently and professionally. Oversee the preparation and presentation of reports to Planning Committee and support Members in decision-making. Provide pre-application advice to developers and landowners to encourage high-quality and sustainable development. Contribute to the development of planning policies, area frameworks, masterplans and development briefs. Lead engagement with residents, stakeholders, developers and government agencies through consultation and partnership working. Support enforcement, heritage, urban design and regulatory colleagues on planning matters and compliance. Manage team performance, resources and work programmes to deliver service targets and priorities. About You You will be an experienced planning leader with strong technical knowledge, stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to manage complex development issues. You Will Have: Extensive experience in development management, including assessing applications and presenting reports to Planning Committee. Chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or equivalent professional standing. Experience leading planning teams and managing complex workloads in a demanding environment. Strong understanding of planning policy, development frameworks and urban regeneration. Excellent communication and negotiation skills when working with developers, Members and the public. Experience managing appeals, hearings and public inquiries. Strong analytical and project management skills to deliver planning objectives effectively. Why Join Us?
