The Role
As Head of SME Business Banking Special Credit Unit you’ll be responsible for supporting customers in financial difficulty (CiFDs) classified at >CRR7.1 while managing credit, operational, compliance and conduct risks and mitigating potential losses.
This is a senior role within Wholesale Credit Risk Management in the UK reporting to the Head of HBUK Special Credit Unit. You’ll oversee a team of 5 direct individuals and 46 indirect individuals with responsibility for a US$1.5bn balance sheet size managed at HBUK SCU level. Working closely with 1LoD, CMB and WCRM colleagues you’ll help identify distress early and put clear strategies in place to protect customers and the bank.
Success means consistent customer outcomes, strong risk management and disciplined execution across forecasting, resourcing and case allocation.
What you\'ll be doing
* Oversee BBSCU, RSCU and PBSCU support for CiFDs classified at >CRR7.1 while mitigating potential losses
* Partner with 1LoD to identify early signs of customer distress and enable proactive action
* Coordinate with CMB and WCRM colleagues to deliver good customer outcomes and minimise losses
* Establish clear strategies and action plans for HRPEs including professional support and adviser appointments where needed
* Embed HSBC’s conduct framework across customer and colleague engagements including use of the “VACS” principles
* Govern credit, operational, compliance, conduct and reputational risks in line with bank policies and procedures
* Deliver key management information including ECL forecasting, cost performance, resourcing calculations and new case allocation
* Brief Executive Management on potential and actual risks and emerging themes across the portfolio
* Draft quarterly RPOC papers and coordinate the production and oversight of UKSCU Manco/governance/people forum packs.
* Play a key role in governance and Manco management including (but not limited to) chairing the quarterly UKSCU meetings, attending the WWM Meetings and the monthly meetings with CMB, PB and the relevant risk leads as an SME.
What we\'re looking for
* Bring substantial experience in special credit, turnaround, workout or recoveries within a regulated banking environment
* Apply strong credit and negotiation skills with a clear focus on conduct framework and reputational risk
* Use established knowledge of financial restructuring tools and techniques
* Demonstrate understanding of the CMB product range including structured facilities and pricing
* Interpret complex information quickly to identify risks and shape practical solutions
* Influence senior internal and external stakeholders to support key decisions and outcomes
* Manage delivery in a fast-moving environment including prioritisation, time management and contingency planning
* Oversee tactical and strategic change with sound judgement and effective people management
