Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Liaison & Diversion (L&D) Team for an L&D Practitioner based in Oldbury, Wolverhampton & Bloxwich custody suites. The role involves identifying people with substance misuse, mental health, learning disability or other vulnerabilities when they first come into contact with the criminal justice system, assessing unmet needs, providing onward referral and signposting, and liaising across agencies to support planning and intervention. The practitioner works in Police Custody Suites, Courts and the Community throughout the Black Country, offering assessments for individuals within the Criminal Justice system including voluntary attendees and brief community‑based interventions to maximise service user access.
Responsibilities
* Conduct holistic health assessments in Liaison and Diversion in partnership with service users and carers, promoting self‑determination and autonomy.
* Prepare written reports for Crown or Magistrates Courts and provide verbal evidence at hearings as required.
* Assess individual needs of service users, agree on and refer to appropriate agencies.
* Complete risk assessments and develop risk‑management plans, encouraging positive risk‑taking to improve quality of life and independence.
* Maintain accurate reporting in electronic health records.
* Use agreed outcome measures to review the effectiveness of the Liaison and Diversion service.
* Utilise Silvercloud and Justice Star tools to support service users.
* Provide feedback to youth justice panels and Youth Offending Services.
Qualifications & Training
* Professional recognised qualification such as RMN, RGN, Learning Disability Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, AHP.
* Degree qualification in a relevant subject or demonstrable evidence/experience equivalent to a degree.
Essential Knowledge & Abilities
* Knowledge of mental health issues and/or learning disability.
* Understanding of the Criminal Justice System and the roles of staff working within it.
* Experience with health screening tools and risk assessment, including safeguarding for adults and children.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation (Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Children Act, Social Care Act, PACE code C).
* Familiarity with information governance, data protection and GDPR.
Travel & Vetting
The practitioner will travel across the three custody suites and must undergo police vetting. Applicants must have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before submitting their vetting application.
