Offer description

The Water Resources and Environment Department is seeking an Asset Scientist for our Hydrogeology Team to support the delivery of our AMP8 programmes and wider water resource abstraction licence management activities within the Asset Strategy and Capital Delivery Department. These activities are part of our Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and aim to optimize water resources to ensure supply-demand balance and environmental protection.

What you'll be doing

You will provide technical support for regulatory aspects of Abstraction Licences, liaising with the Environment Agency on abstractions return, site inspections, and licence variations. Collaboration with colleagues across Asset Strategy and Capital Delivery, especially with Operational and Production teams, will be essential for activities related to abstraction returns, source performance, and supply-demand balance. A key responsibility is to undertake regular water resource condition assessments, informing departments about water supply capabilities and flood/drought prospects.

You will support operational teams in Production and Supply by managing borehole maintenance projects, supervising inspections and rehabilitation to ensure timely and budget-compliant project delivery.

Additional responsibilities include supporting Water Resource WINEP investigations, data collection, and technical assessments of groundwater-surface water interactions. Liaising with the Environment Agency on impacts of groundwater abstraction, Chalk Stream protection, and aquatic ecology studies is also required. Coordination with teams across Asset Strategy and Capital Delivery, including Water Resource Management Planning, Drought Management, Catchment Management, Water Quality, and River Restoration, will be part of your role.

You will conduct fieldwork related to environmental monitoring, site visits, borehole drilling supervision, and inspections. Office tasks involve water resource assessment and abstraction licence management, including data analysis, interpretation, and reporting, with communication of findings to internal teams and external stakeholders such as the Environment Agency, Natural England, river groups, and consultants.

What you need

* Qualified to MSc level (or equivalent) in a scientific discipline, with practical knowledge in hydrology/hydrogeology/aquatic ecology
* Proficient in MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and GIS applications
* Membership of a professional body or chartered status
* Full, clean driving licence
* Proven experience in the UK water industry
* Knowledge of aquatic ecology and hydrology within the WFD framework in the UK context
* Strong report writing skills, with high-quality, accurate work; excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills, including team management
* Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team
* Ability to undertake fieldwork

About the role
