Applications are invited for this full time Consultant Paediatric Haematologist position based at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and the Haematology Laboratory at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the current team of 1 Consultant Paediatric Haematologist and 3 Paediatric Oncologists, alongside the wider team of 10 Consultant Haematologists in NHS Grampian. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have expertise in a broad range of both benign and malignant Neonatal and Paediatric Haematology, Laboratory Haematology and will take an active part in clinical research. The successful candidate will be expected to develop the service within the context of the current interests of the department. The post will include 1 PA per week contributing to the Adult Haematology Service, in an area agreed between the candidate and the Service Clinical Director. An interest in Teenage and Young Adult Haematology will be welcomed. Additionally, this post will also include Laboratory reporting for 1 PA per week.
The Haematology Department has 6 Specialty Trainee posts and 2 Specialty Doctor posts, with the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Service being supported by Paediatric Doctors in Training, a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists, a Data Manager and Clinical Research Nurse.
The postholder will take part in the on-call rota for the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology service, and will provide malignant and non-malignant Haematology advice to the Paediatric and Neonatal teams during office hours and when on call. They will provide advice to colleagues in Primary and Secondary care (this will be 1 in 5 with prospective cover).
Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital provides a range of Secondary and Tertiary Specialties for the North of Scotland, and the Haematology and Oncology Service is an integral part of the Managed Service Network for Children and Young People’s Cancer in NHSScotland. It is located in a dedicated combined Inpatient and Day-Case Facility, co-located with the Paediatric Medical and Surgical Wards. There is close collaboration with the other two Principal Treatment Centres in Scotland, with regional and national MDT working being the cornerstone of the integrated national service. The team provide shared care support to NHS Highland, including a monthly visiting clinic.
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary serves a population of approximately 640,000 and is located at the Foresterhill Site, together with the University of Aberdeen Medical School, the Aberdeen and North East Scotland Transfusion Centre, Roxburghe House, the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. The dedicated Haematology In Patient Unit opened in 2013 and comprises 23 beds. The Haematology Outpatient Department and Day Therapy Unit were refurbished in early 2010. A new combined Haematology and Oncology Outpatient and Day Therapy Facility, the ANCHOR Centre, including a dedicated TYA area, is due to open in 2024 and will be immediately adjacent to the new radiotherapy unit on the Foresterhill Site.
Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview.
Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP).
Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.
Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required. (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post).
