Job Summary
Due to considerable investment, the Pharmacy Department at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated and dynamic Senior Pharmacy Assistant.
Directly accountable to a Lead Pharmacy Technician, you will help shape services and standards, driving improvements in medicines optimisation.
Job Responsibilities
* Receive, interpret, dispense and hand out prescriptions in line with departmental SOPs.
* Undertake patient counselling in the pharmacy/wards under the supervision of a pharmacist or senior pharmacy technician.
* Supply medication to wards, departments and other agencies.
* Recycle or destroy medicines returned from wards, departments and external agencies.
* Order, issue and receive medication and maintain pharmacy stock control system.
* Check expiry dates and safe storage of medicines, ensuring effective action is taken when necessary.
* Participate in clinical trials under direct supervision, preserving relevant details in trials documentation.
* Assist in audit and surveys as directed by line manager.
* Support medicines administration at ward level.
Planning and Organisational Duties
* Understand and implement relevant departmental procedures.
* Suggest improvements to departmental procedures through line management where appropriate.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
* Communicate professionally, providing factual information about availability of medicines to other Trust staff, external departments and patients.
* Participate in induction training of student technicians, pre‑registration pharmacists and other relevant members of the pharmacy team.
* Train and supervise the work of pharmacy assistants.
Person Specification
Essential Knowledge
* Basic computer skills.
* Good general education.
Essential Skills
* Ability to work in a team or independently.
* Methodical and accurate.
* Demonstrated attention to detail.
Essential Experience
* Previous work experience in a pharmacy.
Essential Qualifications
* NVQ Level 2 pharmacy services.
Additional
* May be required to lift heavy objects from time to time.
* Speak English to an appropriate standard (confidence, accuracy, correct sentence structures).
