Freelance M&E (Mechanical Bias) CAD / Design Technician
Location: Milton Keynes – office-based, 3 days per week
Rate: £300–£325/day
Contract: Freelance with potential to move into a permanent role
Overview
We are supporting a public sector organisation seeking a freelance M&E CAD / Design Technician (mechanical bias) to support ongoing building services projects.
This role sits between CAD production and early-stage design support, assisting the team through RIBA Stage 3. It is not a lead design role but requires a working understanding of building services systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production of M&E drawings using AutoCAD (Revit beneficial)
2. Supporting the development of designs through RIBA Stages 2–3
3. Assisting with mechanical services layouts (HVAC, plant rooms, distribution)
4. Working from engineer input to help develop coordinated and buildable designs
5. Contributing to performance specifications and technical documentation
6. Liaising with internal teams to support project delivery and coordination
Required Experience
7. Background in M&E / Building Services, with a mechanical bias preferred
8. Experience as a CAD Technician or Junior/Intermediate Design Engineer
9. Strong AutoCAD capability (Revit advantageous)
10. Exposure to RIBA Stage 2–3 design development
11. Understanding of building services systems (HVAC, etc.)
12. Able to support design—not just produce drawings
Desirable
13. Previous experience in a public sector or local authority environment
14. Exposure to performance specifications / design documentation
15. Experience working in consultancy or D&B contractor environments
Important Note
This role is not a senior or lead design position. It is suited to someone who can bridge the gap between CAD and design support, working under direction while contributing to project development.
