Trust Doctor (ST4-8 equivalent) in Paediatrics

The closing date is 30 June 2025

We are looking for a Trust Doctor (ST4+ equivalent) to join our Paediatrics team St Richard's Hospital, Chichester for a fixed term 12 month post.

This is a full-time role including participation in a full shift rota system. Requests for less than full time working will be considered.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team of 7 whole time equivalent tier 2 doctors to provide a full shift rota covering acute paediatrics and our level 2 Neonatal unit.

Candidates must have completed foundation training (or equivalent) and have a minimum of 2 further years of Paediatric experience including 6 months in a tertiary neonatal unit. Full MRCPCH should be held or be close to being held.

Candidates must have full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.

Candidates will be expected to work together as a team within the Women and Children's Group.


Main duties of the job

As a tier 2 Doctor in Paediatrics & Neonatology at St Richards the post holder is responsible for the following:

* Managing children admitted to the Paediatric ward under supervision of a Consultant
* Clinical assessment and management of children and young people referred to the Paediatric Assessment unit and providing support and advice to A&E doctors and General Practitioners
* Attending resuscitation calls in A&E
* Supervising and supporting Tier 1 doctors in patient care in children's ward and assessment unit
* Managing babies on the level 1 Neonatal unit under supervision of consultant
* Supervision and supporting Tier 1 doctors in patient care for babies on the neonatal unit, maternity unit and postnatal ward
* Attending high risk deliveries on the maternity unit
* Support and teaching of junior medical, nursing staff and medical students
* Engaging in Continuing Professional Development and Audit as appropriate
* Engaging with the Trusts appraisal and revalidation process

So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of duties the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.

The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

Person Specification


Experience/ Qualifications

* oSuccess in MRCPCH Part I or appropriate specialist qualification
* oFull GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* oAdvanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
* oSuccess at MRCPH Part II


Clinical Skills and Experience

* oCapacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement. Potential to develop excellent diagnostic skills
* oEvidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice.
* oAchievement of competences outlined in the Paediatric Curriculum for Level 2 training by the time of application
* oSuccessful completion of APLS and NLS or equivalent
* oSuccessful completion of Safeguarding children: Recognition & response in Child Protection or equivalent
* oPrevious tier 2 level NHS experience in Paediatrics.


Knowledge

* oBreadth of experience in and outside specialty

* oExperience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
* oUnderstanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
* oEvidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended


Teaching Skills

* oEvidence of an interest and commitment to teaching
* oRecognised teaching qualification

* oEvidence of participation in audit
* Research experience
* oPublications
* oPrizes and honours


Career Progression & Personal Attributes

* oAppropriate progression of career to date
* oHave evidence that their present level of achievement and performance is commensurate with the totality of their period of training
* oNot have previously relinquished or been released/removed from a training programme, except under exceptional circumstances
* oEvidence of:- Good communication skills both oral and written
