Requirements
The Principal Teacher reports directly to the Head Teacher. Responsibilities, as outlined in ‘A teaching profession for the 21st century, Annexe B’, include:
* Leading, managing, and setting strategic direction for colleagues
* Curriculum development and quality assurance
* Contributing to school policies on pupil behaviour management
* Managing and guiding colleagues
* Reviewing Continuing Professional Learning (CPL) needs, career development, and performance of colleagues
* Providing advice, support, and guidance to colleagues
* Leading pastoral care and developing related policies
* Managing and developing pastoral care staff
* Implementing school-wide policies on guidance, pastoral care, assessment, and pupil welfare
* Collaborating with colleagues, parents, external agencies, and other schools as appropriate
Key Responsibilities of the Principal Teacher Role
* Line Management: Overseeing classes and activities, including quality assurance, Support for Learning, RCCT staff, and PSW timetabling
* Strategic Coordination: Managing the weekly diary in collaboration with the Head Teacher
* Additional Support Needs (ASN): Leading referrals, coordinating with external agencies, chairing Child Planning Meetings, and supporting initiatives
* Curriculum Leadership: Developing and implementing Numeracy, Mathematics, and Interdisciplinary Learning
* Impact Monitoring: Tracking and assessing the effectiveness of Support for Learning interventions to support learner progress
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a relevant teaching qualification and be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
This position is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will need to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check before starting employment, with costs covered by the candidate. The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59; existing members pay £18.
