Demonstrate leadership. Promote and encourage teamwork. Provide skilled clinical and technical advanced assistance as a member of the operating theatre team. Lead and participate in the assessment of patient care needs implementing and maintaining agreed standards of care. Following Codes of Professional Practice provide high quality care to patients undergoing treatment within the Peri-Operative Environment.


Main duties of the job

1. Line management and supervision of all grades of staff within the sphere of authority, acting as a clinical lead and expert to junior, unqualified and less experienced staff

2. Coordinate and manage own specialty and theatre. Liaise with consultant surgeons and anaesthetists to assess requirements for future operating lists and ensure those requirements are met

3. Take the lead with planning, delivering and evaluation of patient care

4. Work with senior staff to identify and manage staff performance issues, including sickness absence, capability and discipline

5. Participate in the process of recruitment, selection and retention of staff

6. Working with members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team following local policies, protocols and standards

7. Awareness of the effective management of resources within the department

8. Participate in clinical trials, audit and research when required

9. Promote and lead the 'safer surgery' agenda throughout the department

Job responsibilities

* Plan and prepare equipment according to patients needs and procedures
* Maintain user competency for relevant equipment both existing and new, teaching, supervising and signing off junior members of staff
* Implement and evaluate care as appropriate to surgical requirement and patients condition. Supervise and support new and junior members of the team.
* Perform the necessary pre and post-op checks and adhere to the principles of the WHO checklist
* Monitoring and assessing patients condition, responding to changes in condition, proposing / making changes to care plan as required and escalating concerns as appropriate
* Directing and participating in the manoeuvring and the positioning of conscious and unconscious patients
* Handover and transferring responsibility of care to colleagues, ensuring appropriate information and care is relayed
* Supporting and re-assessing patients and relatives/carers during perioperative procedures
* Working within guidelines of NMC and HPC Codes of Practice depending upon registration
* To be aware of the management of drugs and to adhere to local policies and administer drugs as prescribed
* Maintaining accurate patient and theatre records, including electronic records
* Respond to and report untoward incidents as per policy

Participate in out of hours shifts and on call as required

Skills & Attributes

* Demonstrable commitment to teaching and staff development
* Knowledge of equality & diversity, clinical governance, infection control & clinical supervision and how these relate to the role

* An understanding of Resource Management

Qualifications

* RN - 1 ST level Registration
* Mentorship qualification or working towards
* Degree in related Health Care Studies
* PQF theatre modules as part of degree pathway
* 'sign off' Mentorship qualification
* D32 / 33
* EDCL or equivalent
* Post reg. study in Neuro specific area


Knowledge & Experience

* Experience of supporting students / learners in practice
* Significant experience in a related area
* Evidence of achievements in previous posts
* Demonstrate a multi-skilled clinical approach.
* Proven ability to deliver high standards of care
* Experienced in delivering peri operative care in the following areas: o MRI suite o Recovery o Critical care o Invasive Radiological Techniques outside the theatre suite.
