Overview

A Vacancy at South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust.

Locum Consultant Psychiatrist - 6PAs

Duration - 3 - 6 months

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist in our Deaf CAMHS team based in Cambridge. This part time Consultant post provides clinical input to children and young people from Cambridge and East of England, referred to the National Deaf CAMHS Service.

The successful candidate will join an established and stable multidisciplinary team of professionals skilled in mental health and deafness. The multidisciplinary team consists of a mixture of deaf and hearing staff and also sign language interpreters experienced in mental health work. The service is part of the National CAMHS Deaf service with hubs across the country and a unified quality and governance alliance.

South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust hosts three community teams. This team covers Greater London and teams covering Kent/ Medway and Cambridge.

The primary focus of this role will be to provide specialist support for deaf children, many of which will present neurodevelopmental needs. This is, therefore, likely to involve managing ADHD cases that require ongoing medication monitoring and reviews, as well as contributing to the ASD pathway through participation in ADOS assessments and general consensus discussions with the wider team.

To ensure a supported workflow, all cases will have assigned care coordinators. While consultant retains medical oversight for the majority of the caseload, there are collaborative conversations to agree on oversight on a case-by-case basis where appropriate and liaison with local CAMHS for higher risk cases.

Experience of working with deaf community is desirable but not essential and deaf awareness training will be provided.

We are Proud to Belong at South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust.

We have expert services, a rich history and a clear commitment to providing the best quality care for those with mental ill-health. The Care Quality Commission already rates our services as 'good' - we aspire to be 'outstanding'.

This is a great time to join us. We are transforming the way we care for our communities to support our mission of Making Life Better Together. We have built two brand new mental health facilities at Springfield University Hospital, which are amongst the best in the world. More developments are planned across our sites and services.

We are inclusive and diverse and strive to be actively anti racist. We want to attract people from all backgrounds and experiences to enrich the work we do together. We are proud to co-produce and involve our local communities in all that we do.

We offer flexible working, career development and a variety of benefits to enable a positive, welcoming environment in which our people and their careers can thrive.

* Providing services that are linguistically and culturally accessible.
* An increase in skilled Deaf and hearing bilingual practitioners working together to provide a highly specialised service for families who access the service.
* Promoting social inclusion and reducing isolation for a minority population.
* Promoting systemic changes that impact positively on mental health including safe inclusive education where communication needs are met, and children and young people have access to healthy learning and peer relationships.
* Improving mental health and wellbeing in a complex group of children and young people where mental health problems and deafness co-exist.
* Improving quality of life in a vulnerable group of young people.
* Promoting an equitable and accessible mental health service at highly specialist levels for deaf children and young people and their families.
* Reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and inadequate or delayed treatment.
* An aspiration to reduce rates of mental health problems in deaf adults.
