Overview
The Lead General Practice Nurse is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe and effective nursing care to the entire practice population. They lead the nursing team, manage resources, and provide clinical leadership to support service delivery and high-quality, patient-centred care.
Working with GPs and the Practice Manager, the Lead Nurse focuses on evidence-based care for acute and chronic conditions and implements preventative nursing interventions for all patients. They collaborate with the wider practice team to meet patient needs and drive practice performance and quality improvement.
Responsibilities
* Lead and develop nursing services, providing clinical leadership and guidance.
* Manage a personal caseload for acute and chronic conditions and review medications in line with protocols.
* Prioritise complex or urgent needs and initiate emergency care where required.
* Deliver advanced evidence-based care and lead nurse-led services in chronic disease management.
* Provide immunisations, cytology, wound care, travel advice, health screening and related nursing procedures (e.g., venepuncture, spirometry, BP management).
* Support minor surgery and promote health education; prescribe safely where qualified.
* Maintain accurate, confidential records in line with NMC standards and contribute to achieving practice targets and contractual obligations.
* Contribute to teaching and mentoring of students and junior staff; undertake appraisals and share learning within the team.
* Engage in CPD, mandatory training, and promote evidence-based practice; work to the NMC Code and relevant health policies.
* Manage rotas, leave, and team development; participate in service development and quality improvement activities.

* Maintain NMC registration and engage in CPD; meet statutory and mandatory training requirements.
* Promote evidence-based practice, quality assurance, and leadership with emphasis on equality and diversity.
* Demonstrate ability to work in accordance with health policies and provide clinical leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
* Essential: Adult nursing degree, NMC registration, clinical supervision training; minimum 5 years post-registration experience; at least 2 years in primary care; experience in chronic disease management, immunisations, cytology and wound care; leadership and teaching experience; strong communication and organisational skills; ability to work unsupervised.
* Desirable: Specialist qualifications in chronic disease, cytology, travel medicine, prescribing, mentorship; experience in education, protocol implementation, team leadership, change management; extended and supplementary prescribing qualifications.
