Role Description
Department
As a member of staff in the Department of Sociology, you’ll be joining a vibrant community of people working together to effect practical change through research and inspire cohorts of undergraduate and postgraduate students. We are committed to the vision of being part of a University for the Public Good.
Established in 1965, the Department of Sociology has played, and continues to play, an important role in the development of the discipline internationally. We have expertise in areas including culture, conversation analysis, urban sociology, criminology, ethnicity, migration, gender, sexuality, health, science and technology, and religion.
We have a proven track record in both teaching with a focus on how actions are shaped by our social environment and the values, ideas and beliefs people hold and how lives are lived. The Department delivers 8 undergraduate programmes and 6 postgraduate programmes, many of which are taught in combination with partner departments, reflecting our commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
We are housed in the Law and Sociology Building, which is situated on Campus East, University of York.
Role
The Department of Sociology is seeking to appoint a part-time Lecturer to join the department from the 1st of October 2025 or as soon as possible after that date. The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the activities of the department, to collaborate on the design and delivery of modules, and to deliver lectures, lead seminars and provide other forms of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
We are seeking candidates with knowledge of any of the department’s key areas of expertise. In this instance, established knowledge in any of the following areas would be desirable but not essential: Digital sociology, digital research methods, quantitative methods, digital criminology or virtual crime.
The role is available for a period of three years and will be based in the Department of Sociology, with teaching to be delivered at the University of York campus.
Skills, Experience & Qualification Needed

* Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
