Morson Vital are working with a major contractor to hire an experienced Design Manager for their growing Life Sciences & Technology division.
In this role, you’ll lead the design on complex, high‑value projects, either across several schemes or on one major project. You’ll manage the design process through both pre‑construction and construction, work closely with clients and stakeholders and make sure all design work meets required technical, regulatory and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead design delivery across multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Manage the pre‑construction design process and briefings.
* Oversee design information production, control, and distribution.
* Ensure designs are reviewed for buildability, safety, maintainability, and compliance.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
* Act as a primary client‑facing representative.
* Liaise with scientists, engineers, vendors, consultants, and regulatory bodies.
* Collaborate closely with bid, operations, commercial, digital, and innovation teams.
Technical & Process Governance
* Challenge and interrogate design solutions within a collaborative framework.
* Ensure compliance with RIBA, FEL and AEC workflows.
* Implement design change control, information management, and quality checks.
* Identify and resolve technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
Team & Consultancy Management
* Lead and mentor junior Design Managers / Coordinators.
* Manage external design consultancies and specialist suppliers.
* Support solution optioneering and Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DfMA).
Experience & Knowledge
* 10+ years’ experience in design management within the LST, pharma, biotech, cleanroom or advanced technology sectors.
* Strong understanding of procurement and contract routes including:
* Design & Build (D&B)
* EPCM / EPC
* JCT & NEC
* Deep knowledge of life science technologies, equipment, workflows and instrumentation.
Technical Background
* Strong design bias from either:
* Architectural / CSA, or
* Engineering / MEP
* With good cross‑discipline understanding.
Qualifications
* Degree or diploma in Construction, Engineering, Architecture or equivalent.
