Practice Nurse

Closing date: 19 April 2026.

The University of Nottingham Health Service require a highly motivated and experienced Practice Nurse to join our dedicated multi‑disciplinary healthcare team. Previous work in general practice preferred or experience in managing long‑term conditions.

The position is for 21 hours per week: Thursday 7.30‑3.30 and approximately 4 Saturday mornings per year.

Main duties of the job

To deliver high-quality, evidence‑based nursing care to patients within the University of Nottingham Health Centre (Cripps Health Centre).

To work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The role focuses on health promotion, disease prevention, and the management of long‑term conditions in line with NHS policies and guidelines.

Job responsibilities


Key Duties and Responsibilities

* Deliver holistic, patient‑centred care in accordance with NHS standards and practice protocols
* Undertake general nursing duties including wound care, dressings, injections, and venepuncture
* Administer childhood and adult immunisations and vaccinations in line with national schedules
* Perform cervical screening where qualified
* Provide contraception and sexual health advice
* Carry out health checks (e.g., NHS Health Checks, new patient checks)
* Support the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of long‑term conditions (e.g. diabetes, asthma, hypertension)
* Provide travel health advice and vaccinations (where trained)
* Promote health and wellbeing through lifestyle advice (smoking cessation, diet, exercise)
* Support patients in self‑management of chronic conditions
* Contribute to public health initiatives and screening programmes


Administration and professional responsibilities

* Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the Practice team
* Ensure that accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patient’s notes
* Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the Practice
* Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad‑hoc reports and audit
* Attend and participate in Practice meetings as required


Clinical Governance & Quality

* Work within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct
* Maintain accurate, contemporaneous patient records using NHS clinical systems (e.g., EMIS, SystmOne)
* Participate in audit, quality improvement, and risk management activities
* Adhere to infection prevention and control policies
* Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed for vulnerable adults and children


Team Working

* Work collaboratively with GPs, healthcare assistants, pharmacists, and other professionals
* Contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
* Support and mentor junior staff or students where appropriate


Professional Development

* Maintain NMC registration and revalidation requirements
* Undertake relevant training (e.g., immunisations, chronic disease management)


Person Specification

* Registered Nurse with valid registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
* Experience in a primary care or community setting (or transferable skills)
* Competence in core nursing skills (e.g., wound care, injections)
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work autonomously and within a team
* Non‑medical prescribing qualification preferred but not essential
* Experience managing long‑term conditions (e.g. diabetes, asthma)
* Cervical cytology and immunisation training
* Knowledge of NHS systems (EMIS, SystmOne)
* Understanding of Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF)
* Commitment to patient‑centred care
* Compassion, respect, and dignity
* Accountability and professionalism
* Continuous improvement and learning


Experience

* Experience of working in primary care
* Experience of working in a GP practice


Knowledge and Skills

* Ability to provide quality care
* Good interpersonal and communication skills
