Position Summary
The Addiction Counselor is responsible for delivering contracted substance use disorder services within the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority facilities. Key duties include screening and assessment of psychiatric, medical, social, employment, and residential needs, as well as risk factors for re-incarceration, shortly after an individual's admission to jail. The counselor also liaises with correctional facilities, community services, and resources to address inmate needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Assess booking information to identify issues related to alcohol and drugs.
2. Screen new arrivals for substance use severity.
3. Review referrals from healthcare and security staff to determine needs.
4. Triages patients for addiction severity, medical, and psychiatric care.
5. Provide brief supportive interactions during medically supervised withdrawal.
6. Complete screening tools for substance use disorders.
7. Conduct comprehensive assessments of addiction issues.
8. Offer psychoeducational group therapy focusing on addiction and relapse prevention.
9. Coordinate Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs, including screening, consent, medical clearance, lab work, induction, therapy, and community referrals.
10. Coordinate care with community providers and supervision agencies.
11. Connect patients with on-site services and programs.
12. Prepare fee slips, collect signatures, and handle documentation.
13. Manage patient health records and ensure confidentiality per HIPAA.
14. Assist in preparing reports and maintaining logs.
15. Adhere to all relevant policies, procedures, and timelines.
Minimum Requirements
* Current CPR Certification
* Preferred experience includes at least two years in addiction counseling and one year in correctional settings.
