This is an Emergency Medicine Consultant post to join the consultant body at The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (THH), providing acute and emergency services to a busy local acute hospital with a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services.
The post holder will play a key role in realising the Trust’s ambition to build a high quality clinical service. The successful applicant must be a committed clinician with a track record of excellent clinical service delivery, quality improvement, teaching and training. All doctors are required to participate in annual job planning, annual appraisal as part of revalidation.
The post-holder reports to the Clinical Lead of Emergency Medicine and is responsible to the Divisional Director for Unplanned Care. The post is a 10 PA role: 8.5 direct clinical care (DCC), 1.5 supporting professional activities (SPA) – clinical and educational supervision, audit and personal CPD. An additional SPA can be agreed for departmental activities.
Key responsibilities include:
Clinical Responsibilities
* Delivery of good quality evidence‑based care to patients in the Emergency Department.
* Availability to support and help junior staff with daily clinical and non‑clinical problems; structured clinical shifts across all shop‑floor areas are a key part of the job plan.
* Clinical supervision of junior doctors during shop‑floor sessions, including patient review, direct management of difficult cases and sick children; teaching junior staff, EM trainees, and nursing staff – formal, informal and scenario‑based.
* Management of national targets (e.g. 4‑hour target, KPIs) using appropriate strategies to avoid breaches and awareness of the escalation plan (OPEL scores).
* Management of quality and safety: review of results, x‑rays, clinical incidents and complaints/Datix, quality assurance of junior staff.
* Attendance and leadership at multidisciplinary department meetings and clinical governance meetings.
* Appraisal of junior staff and workplace assessments for all trainees, irrespective of speciality.
* Provision and maintenance of up‑to‑date written guidance and protocols in liaison with other specialties.
* Ensuring procedures and policies are followed, e.g. Infection Control, Trauma calls.
* Adult and child protection duties in collaboration with other hospital services; lead systems for at‑risk or vulnerable ED patient groups; support and leadership of the Mount Vernon minor injuries unit as required.
Management Responsibilities
* Collaborate with Lead Clinician and Senior Nursing Team to develop and implement relevant department policies.
* Participate in committees relating to the Emergency Department (Clinical Governance, Safeguarding Adults and Children, Transfusion, Resuscitation, Medicines Management).
* Meet regularly with Clinical Lead / Divisional Director to review and develop the agreed job plan in line with the Consultant Contract.
* Co‑operate with the consultant team in recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff, in line with People and Organisational Development and the EM Management Team; also involve with recruitment of Registrars, Middle‑grade/SHO doctors and nurses as required.
* Ensure junior doctors use the computer systems and any recent updates; provide education and direction of their activity.
* Get involved in audit and quality improvement programmes within the department and across the Trust.
* Actively participate in and advocate for the Trust Improvement programme (CARES plus).
Teaching Responsibilities
* Participate in regular teaching programmes for SHO and SAS/Registrar teaching.
* Provide one‑to‑one mentoring, skills training, and competency‑based assessments for all junior doctors.
* Provide clinical supervision for approximately five locally employed junior doctors.
* Support undergraduate teaching for medical students from Imperial and Brunel.
* Participate in teaching and supervision of junior doctors in training (FY, ACCS, GPVTS and specialty training doctors).
