Principal Clinical Psychologist for Stroke

Following investment from the Stroke Quality Improvement for Rehabilitation Project (SQuIRe) an exciting opportunity for an experienced Clinical Psychologist to develop and lead the psychology input to the recently expanded Integrated Community Stroke Service (ICSS) has arisen at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. You will be welcomed by the Neuropsychology and ICSS Teams and be supported to develop the role. The post will involve working as part of a multidisciplinary community stroke team providing rehabilitation up to six months post stroke within patient homes.

As a valued member of the MDT, you will provide consultation, training and supervision to staff on patients' psychological/neuropsychological wellbeing. You will provide line management and supervision of colleagues in Clinical Psychology. You will work with the senior leadership team in enhancing psychological understanding to support the wider system including supporting a stepped care model for mood and cognition.

The role is permanent, 0.8 wte 8b, it may also be offered on a secondment basis as appropriate. You will have completed or currently be enrolled on the knowledge component of the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology. Candidates wishing to complete the full QiCN may be supported to complete the practice element on discussion at interview.


Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the development and delivery of a high quality, specialist Clinical Psychology service for adults up to six months post stroke within their home environment. This includes providing specialist neuropsychological assessment and a therapeutic service to individuals including cognitive rehabilitation and improving coping and adjustment to living with neurological impairment. You will be required to design and implement care pathways and protocols to assess and manage mood and cognition difficulties in accordance with national guidance. You will liaise with both the hospital stroke ward and with colleagues in Primary Care. You will support the ICSS team offering advice, consultation, training and supervision regarding the neuropsychological assessment and management of stroke. The service will be run in line with relevant national guidelines, and you will be encouraged to engage with appropriate CPD and networking to ensure best practice.

You must be a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist and have substantive post qualification experience of working with people with neurological conditions. You will have completed or be enrolled on the Post Doctoral Diploma in Clinical Neuropsychology or equivalent as approved by the Division of Neuropsychology. You must have excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with a range of professionals, patients, and families.


Job responsibilities

* To design and deliver a specialist clinical psychology service within Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for patients accessing the Integrated Community Stroke Service. Offer highly specialised neuropsychological assessment and evidence-based interventions as required (face-to-face and by telephone/video) to adults within the first 6 months post-stroke living with the cognitive, emotional and behavioural consequences of stroke. Provide risk management and assessment of mental capacity.
* To support the Integrated Community Stroke Service multidisciplinary team with psychological aspects of their work with patients and families/carers, offering consultation, teaching, training, reflective practice and joint working to support rehabilitation of the individual.
* Develop care pathways and protocols for the assessment and treatment of cognition and mood related to stroke and implement within the service using a stepped care model.
* To conduct audit and evaluation on the effectiveness of the ICSS including psychology. Offer opportunities to Clinical Psychology Doctorate Trainees and other aspiring Clinical Psychologists from local courses, as appropriate.
* Support, supervise and line manage psychology staff as appropriate.
* To be a teaching and training resource to local Clinical Psychology Training programmes, and other training events as required.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.


Person Specification


Qualifications & professional membership

* BPS accredited Doctoral Level training qualification in Clinical Psychology
* Eligible for Chartered status of the British Psychological Society
* Health & Care Professions Council Registered as a Practitioner Psychologist: Clinical Psychologist
* Completion of a Clinical Psychology supervision qualification as recognised by the D.Clin Psy training courses.
* Completion of or current enrollment on Postdoctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology at either Diploma or MSc level as recognised by the BPS Division of Neuropsychology.
* Completion of a Clinical Psychology supervision qualification as recognised by the D.Clin Psy training courses
* BPS Chartered Psychologist Status;
* Member of The Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists/Practitioner Full Member of the Division of Neuropsychology
* Holder of the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology (QiCN)
* Experience of publishing in peer reviewed journals


Experience

* Substantive post qualification experience in clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation
* Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team in a health setting
* Experience with a variety of neuropsychological assessments and interventions
* Experience of teaching and training
* Substantive experience of providing professional and clinical supervision and consultation
* Experience of working with carers and relatives
* Experience of working with commissioning bodies to advise on service requirements
* Experience of evaluation of goal based outcomes
* Experience of managing the workload of other staff


Knowledge

* Advanced and specialist knowledge of psychological issues in the neuropsychology of stroke, stroke rehabilitation and physical health care including national guidelines
* Evidence of research and service evaluation skills
* Committed to maintaining clinical skills and knowledge in clinical neuropsychology and stroke rehabilitation
* Evidence of developing stroke rehabilitation services


Skills

* Able to display empathy and professionalism whilst communicating with clients where there may be high levels of emotion, hostility, and resistance
* Able to communicate with clients with cognitive and communication difficulties
* Able to relate well to other professional groups


Contractual requirements

* A full current UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010. Ability to travel to provide a service as part of a community team in patients' homes as well as between sites
* Ability to carry out work from home in a confidential and professional manner when required including adequate internet connection


Physical Requirements

* Sustained periods of sitting and is required to travel to patient homes and between NHS sites to deliver a psychological service as part of a community team. The post holder is required to move psychometric tests and portable IT equipment as required
