We are inviting candidates to be part of our Anaesthetic Consultant team at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working across both our hospital sites at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester.

We are excited to announce the opening of our state-of-the-art Orthopaedic Centre in Winchester, scheduled for July 2025. This new facility is a testament to our Trust’s ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the region and working collaboratively with orthopaedic services across Hampshire and Isle of Wight to serve patients across our communities.

This is a full time 10 PA Consultant Anaesthetist post, which is based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester (RHCH). If desired some anaesthetic sessions could be delivered cross-site by mutual agreement and depending on service needs.

The successful candidate will work within our friendly Anaesthetic Consultant team and provide departmental leadership and supervision of a group of junior and mid-grade doctors at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

Role-specific duties:

Provide a safe, effective, responsive, and caring anaesthetic service to a level expected by a Consultant.

Agree a job plan with the Clinical Director in Anaesthetics and work flexibly as far as is possible to accommodate the needs of the Department.

To ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, quality improvement hampshirehospitalscareers.co.uk and evidence-based research.

Participate actively in clinical governance, including reporting of incidents, investigation of serious incidents and any complaints.

Show a determination to meet or exceed the standards of the National Patients’ Rights Charter.

To be familiar with the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ curriculum for Junior Doctor Training and contribute to their training requirements, including tutorials and educational supervision where required.

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
2. Entry onto GMC specialist register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
3. MBBS or equivalent
4. FRCA & CCT in anaesthesia (or CESR)

Desirable criteria

5. Membership of relevant Specialist Societies
6. MD or equivalent

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria

7. Experience of general and regional anaesthesia to the level expected of UK consultant anaesthetist for a wide range of surgical specialities

Clinical Skills & Ability

Essential criteria

8. Evidence of organisational ability
9. Willingness to share administrative responsibilities
10. Willingness to work flexibly to a level which would be reasonably expected of a consultant
11. Understand the NHS system nationally; regionally and locally
12. Aware of issues affecting current and future NHS practice
13. Understands concepts and principles of clinical goverance
14. Able to demonstrate leadership capability with multi-disciplinary teams
15. Effective communicator and team worker
16. Able to take responsibility, cope with stressful situations and adapt to change

Desirable criteria

17. Attended an NHS Management Course appropriate to consultant duties
18. Critical and enquiring approach to knowledge acquisition

Research & Teaching skills

Essential criteria

19. Commitment to teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates, with evidence of active participation in teaching
20. An understanding of general principles, scientific method, and interpretation of literature
21. Willingness to participate in formal teaching sessions
22. Thorough understanding of principles of medicine audit
23. Completed audit projects with evidence of active participation in audit

Desirable criteria

24. Attendance at specialist programmes to improve teaching, possession of certificates or diplomas of special expertise in teaching
25. Evidence of personal research projects and their presentation
26. Publications in peer reviewed journals

Other specific requirements

Essential criteria

27. An appropriate, well-organised, and clearly presented CV including experience in the training of Specialist Trainees
28. Willingness to pick up occasional extra work both in and out of hours beyond job plan with mutual agreement
29. Willingness to work across Trust sites dependent on the needs of the service
30. A sympathetic approach to patients and relatives
31. Punctuality, reliabilty and approachability
32. Ability to maintain excellent professional relations with others

33. Demonstrable ability to effect positive sustainable change
34. Awareness of current service development issues within HHFT
