Overview
Leading a team of talented Pre and Postdoctoral Fellows, you will oversee their day-to-day research activities providing mentorship and guidance, and actively step in where needed to support problem solving and technical issues. As a Staff Scientist you will also have the opportunity to pursue your own research interests in line with the group's direction. You will co-manage the annual budget and financial planning processes, technical hiring and the group\'s performance management for Postdoctoral Fellows.
Based at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton, UK you\'ll join over 700 scientists, technical and professional services experts working to support EMBL\'s mission. You will report to Professor Ewan Birney FRS and join the Birney Research Group, which focuses on genomics, genetic algorithms and analytical methods, including machine learning and AI schemes. EMBL-EBI is a data powerhouse advancing scientific discovery through bioinformatics to address infectious diseases, food insecurity and biodiversity.
Responsibilities
* Provide oversight for the Birney Research Group in both managerial and technical aspects.
* Provide a framework for the data and administrative aspects.
* Lead aspects of the research programme directly.
* Have direct line management of the Fellows in the group.
* Support Ewan Birney in PhD student management. The students will be supervised by Ewan Birney, but staff scientists should be available for technical problem solving.
* Represent the group for internal and external meetings as applicable.
* Maintain an expectation of at least 3 days a week in person presence, and 5 days a week online presence.
* Contract length: 3 years, renewable to a maximum of 9 years.
* Contribute to multi-disciplinary collaborations within EMBL-EBI and with external partners.
Qualifications
* PhD in a quantitative science.
* 5 years or more experience in genomics, genetics or AI.
* Good interpersonal skills.
* Good scientific data management experience.
* Programming experience, e.g., Python or another language.
* Fluency in English.
* Experience in working in multi-cultural settings.
* Proficiencies in other European languages besides English.
* Experience in AI and machine learning.
