Our ambition is that by 2050, waters from catchment to coast are cleaner and thriving. We need a Marine Water Quality Officer to help make this happen.
You’ll join the Marine team in Operations Catchment Services, applying technical expertise in marine environments, modelling, and data analysis to support evidence-based decisions.
We assess the impact of discharges on water quality across key areas, including Nuclear New Build, major infrastructure projects, and the Water Industry National Environment Programme. We also model bathing water quality and nutrient loads in estuaries.
We have 2 positions to backfill: one permanent and one fixed term for 6 months.
Responsibilities
* Provide timely answers to technical questions.
* Review reports and summarise key information for decision‑making.
* Use data to inform water quality models.
* Apply sound records management principles.
* Interpret monitoring data and model outputs to support environmental protection.
* Summarise and communicate technical work and raise challenges when needed.
* Build strong relationships across a dispersed team and with external partners.
* Use your initiative to contribute to the work of the team and the wider organisation.
* Take on incident management duties with full training and support, which may include additional payment and flexible arrangements.
Qualifications and Skills
* Experience in data analysis and familiarity with modelling software.
* Proficiency with Excel, Access, R, Power BI, GIS, and specialist packages such as Mike or Cormix.
* Ability to review complex reports and communicate key issues to non‑technical audiences.
* Strong communication skills to summarise and convey technical information and to raise challenges.
* Capacity to build relationships across dispersed teams and with external partners.
* Good initiative and proactive contribution to team objectives.
* Knowledge of water quality and marine environment desirable.
* A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline; professional membership or progress towards it desirable.
* Comfortable working virtually and travelling for occasional national meetings.
* Willingness to work on a flexible/hybrid base.
Training and Development
Training and mentoring will be provided. The role offers opportunities to develop technical expertise and professional membership.
