Job purpose The main purpose of this job is to conduct high-quality research in support of the Faculty of Business and Creative Industries and USW Research Strategy 2030. It will involve undertaking and where appropriate leading research projects; conducting high-quality independent research leading to REF-quality outputs; developing research & innovation impact and where appropriate conducting public engagement events; submitting external funding applications; providing support in developing the faculty’s performance and interactive & immersive technologies agenda. You will need to work closely with the R&I staff within the faculty and the broader subject area teams, as well as colleagues across Research and Innovation Services and the broader professional services. Key responsibilities 1. To undertake and where appropriate lead research activities and projects, including the development of personal, group or collaborative objectives. 2. To develop own or collaborative research projects leading to REF-quality research contributions, disseminating research findings through appropriate media and with a view to generating research impact. 3. To remain abreast of new initiatives, strategic interventions and research which contributes to the subject area. 4. To be involved in FBCI research public dissemination programme, including supporting events and communications strategy (including websites). 5. To prepare reports and present information to Research & Innovation Groups, particularly in support of identifying new opportunities for collaboration, innovation and grant capture. 6. To offer recommendations for action in industry, education and policy areas, based on research findings, where appropriate. 7. To identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of application. 8. To contribute to the faculty’s research-led curriculum in the areas of performance and interactive and immersive technologies; where required, undertaking the supervision of student projects (including postgraduate research students) and the use of research tools and equipment. 9. To adhere to good research conduct throughout including secure management of data, and compliance with USW ethics processes, and at times lead upon research governance issues. 10. To participate in internal and external networks and collaborative groups, always representing the faculty and the university in a professional manner. 11. To undertake continuous personal and professional development which contributes to knowledge and skills within the subject area. 12. To comply with university policies relating to health and safety, equality of opportunity and data management. 13. Any other duties as maybe assigned from time to time commensurate with the grade. Person Specification To be able to undertake this role effectively you will need the key attributes and skills outlined below. When completing your application ensure you demonstrate how you meet these criteria. 1 A PhD in a relevant subject* 2 Have excellent independent research skills that enable you to produce high quality research outputs and impacts and an existing track record of doing so, whether by publication or practice.* 3 Have excellent knowledge of the evolving field of performance and interactive and immersive technology and the way this intersects with the skills and innovation challenges facing the creative industries. * 4 Have good knowledge of research methods and research governance issues. * 5 Be able to present and write with clarity and authority in presenting research findings and recommendations to academic, policy, and industry stakeholders. * 6 Have a good understanding of the Research & Innovation landscape for the subject in Wales and the UK, including knowledge of potential opportunities for funding and of the funding application process. * 7 Have experience of engagement in the dissemination of research (e.g. conference & workshop attendance, membership of professional bodies) likely to contribute to the REF People, Culture and Environment statement. * 8 Have a good understanding of innovation in the wider research landscape including within industrial settings. 9 Ability to manage online spaces including social media engagement and research websites. 10 Excellent organisational and administrative skills that means you can manage your own time effectively to ensure milestones are achieved in a timely and effective manner. 12 Have a problem-solving approach that quickly identifies solutions rather than dwells on obstacles. 13 The ability to communicate in the Welsh language is desirable.
