Reporting Sonographer or Vascular Scientist

Full or part‑time positions are available at a teaching hospital that trains direct‑entry students and in‑house Ultrasound students to PGD and MSc level. This role requires a highly specialist clinical service and an expert practitioner who can adapt clinical remit in line with departmental service needs.


Responsibilities

* Undertake a range of Ultrasound examinations within scope of clinical expertise, including obstetric, gynaecological, general abdominal, vascular and additional procedures depending on training and knowledge base.
* Adapt clinical remit and train to undertake newly developed Ultrasound procedures.
* Act as an expert practitioner demonstrating advanced clinical competencies and knowledge.
* Assist in establishing standards and guidelines for best practice, and propose changes in procedures and protocols.
* Train and support Student Sonographers to maintain service continuity.
* Justify and authorise imaging requests and liaise with Radiology/Radiography colleagues to provide specialist advice.
* Review images and ensure supplementary imaging procedures/views are considered prior to patient departure.
* Provide prompt formal written and verbal reports to referring clinicians.
* Register and enter accurate data onto the RIS.
* Acquire high‑standard diagnostic images, position patients accurately and adapt techniques where necessary.
* Review current literature, suggest changes to departmental imaging protocols and keep infection control measures utilised.
* Work as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team providing high quality service to patients.
* Maintain and safely use specialised equipment (£30,000+).
* Carry out safe transfer of patients and equipment, and adhere to manual handling guidelines.
* Attend departmental meetings and contribute to departmental issues.
* Adapt quickly to service changes, and keep equipment and work areas clean and tidy.
* Complete paperwork compliance with Trust policies, e.g. incident forms.
* Make decisions using initiative, including referral to Child Protection Team if required.
* Provide problem solving and staff allocation, particularly during absence.
* Conduct examinations according to protocol for clinical trials, and participate in extended 7‑day ultrasound services.


Qualifications and Experience

* Ultrasound case accredited course with experience or current student that qualifies.
* Working knowledge of Radiology Information Systems.
* MSC/PGD Ultrasound or Vascular Science qualification or equivalent.
* Demonstrated IT literacy to an appropriate level.
* Evidence of continuing professional education.
* General experience relevant to the post at degree level or equivalent.
* Recent post‑registration experience.
* Experience of MDT working.
* Monitoring and supervising junior staff and assistants.
* Experience training students and junior staff.
* Ability to prioritise and awareness of developments in NHS and service delivery.
* Participation in audit and research/evaluation of practice.
* Strong teamwork skills.
* Strong communication and presentation skills, and ability to work independently.
* Ability to self‑motivate and demonstrate a flexible approach to changing circumstances.
* UK professional registration (necessary).
