A leading wholesale food distributor in the South West is seeking an experienced
Credit Controller
to take ownership of their credit control function, drive process improvements, and help bring structure to a growing B2B ledger.
Following a recent merger and continued growth, they are looking for someone with the confidence and commercial understanding to step in, take the reins, and create lasting change within a high-volume, fast-paced finance team.
The Opportunity
This is a newly shaped position, reporting to the Finance Director and working alongside a dedicated Sales Ledger team of five. The successful candidate will lead the credit control operations, introduce and refine systems, and manage customer relationships to reduce aged debt and improve cashflow.
It is an ideal role for someone with a hands-on approach who thrives in an evolving environment. Someone who has been through the credit control trenches and knows how to bring order to a complex ledger.
Key Responsibilities
* Take full ownership of the credit control function, systems, and daily operations
* Manage a B2B customer base of 2,500–3,500 accounts
* Contact customers by phone and email to chase payments, resolve queries, and build strong relationships
* Identify high-risk accounts and manage the escalation process through to legal proceedings if required
* Reduce aged debt and improve DSO through structured and persistent credit management
* Work with the Sales Ledger team to embed consistent credit control practices
* Provide regular cash collection and aged debt reporting to senior finance leadership
* Support training and development within the team
What They're Looking For
* Previous experience in a senior credit control role, ideally within a B2B environment
* Experience managing large ledgers (2,500+ accounts)
* Strong understanding of credit risk, customer management, and legal collection processes
* Confident communicator, able to manage challenging conversations with diplomacy and professionalism
* Experience improving or implementing credit control systems and procedures
* Strong Excel skills
* Self-motivated, organised, and resilient under pressure
