Job Title: Mechanical Engineering (LPB)
Job Profile: Lead Engineer 2
Location: Stafford, UK
P&L: Grid Solutions
Product Portfolio: HVDC
Job Type: Engineering
Band: LPB2
Reporting to: Team Leader Valve Mechanical Engineering
Duration: 6 months initially (Extandable)
About Client – HVDC PDG:
The Client's facility based in Stafford is an international leader in high power electronics and control technology, specialising in the engineering of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Systems using both Line-Commutated (thyristor-based) and Voltage-Sourced (IGBT-based) converter technologies.
With over 50 years of experience in HVDC, Client's HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford provides complete turn-key solutions for the rapidly growing global HVDC market. Project Management, Engineering, Manufacturing, Test Laboratories and Research & Development are all located in Stafford. This unique setup gives HVDC engineers at Stafford exposure across the manufacturing cycle; allowing innovation and design to quickly influence new and existing products. The HVDC Research & Development Departments are at the forefront of worldwide innovation in HVDC and are expanding rapidly.
Scope of the role:
* As a seismic specialist Mechanical Engineer, you will report to the HVDC Valve Engineering Mechanical Team Leader within the Product Delivery Group (PDG) of Grid Systems Integration (GSI).
* The purpose of the role is to design, analyse, and support testing of mechanical systems and structures for our HVDC Valve products that must meet stringent seismic and structural requirements. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, cooling engineers, and external compliance experts to ensure that our products are robust, compliant, and manufacturable.
* You will perform seismic qualification analyses (e.g., response spectrum, time-history analysis) in accordance with standards such as IEEE 693, ASCE 7.
* Work with the team to prepare documentation packages for seismic certification through testing or analysis (including FEA and shake table test coordination). Collaborate with third-party labs for seismic testing and certification.
* Support structural analysis and design reviews for compliance with regional and global seismic codes.
* Work with manufacturing, site and quality teams to ensure DFM (Design for Manufacture) and structural integrity during installation.
* Contribute to thermal and vibration analysis in conjunction with seismic requirements.
* Evaluate and specify fasteners, supports, damping materials, and anchorage systems for seismic performance.
* Maintain accurate documentation of designs, test results, and engineering change orders.
* The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which client's leading contribution has worldwide recognition.
* The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their skills and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field. Whilst ideally based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford this role could be located at any of the client's sites but would then involve regular travel to the UK.
Candidate profile:
* The candidate will probably be educated to degree level in mechanical engineering. However, this is not as important as a proven track record and evidence that you have the experience and abilities to perform the role.
* Candidates should have proven experience with seismic analysis and testing for electrical/mechanical equipment. It is key that the candidate has the ability to work quickly and efficiently within an engineering team.
* Proficient in CAD software (Creo, or similar) and FEA tools (ANSYS preferred or SAP2000). Able to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation.
* Have familiarity with industry seismic standards (IEEE 693) and the materials used in high-voltage environments.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Knowledge of document control methodologies and systems.
* EHS compliance ability - good strong knowledge of safety and the environment.
Desired Characteristics:
* Prior experience of electrical transmission, HVDC or related industry.
* Able to work to deadlines with high quality
* High attention to detail.
* Has been involved in continuous improvement / LEAN activities.
Willing and able to travel globally (potentially including off shore / sea platforms) for short periods of time.
