Trainee Leakage Technician
RPS is hiring Trainee Leakage Engineers in Greater Manchester. This permanent, full‑time role (Monday to Friday 07:00 – 15:30 plus overtime) includes a company van and offers the chance to progress within RPS’s Water Operations Division.
About the Team
The Asset, Surveying and Inspection (AS&I) team delivers industry‑leading services to the UK Water Industry. Team members support water networks, drainage, surveying, leakage consultancy, water resources, and efficiency initiatives, analysing data to reduce leakage and prevent flooding and pollution.
About You
You will work flexibly—including weekends, evenings and overtime—and be ready to travel to various sites. Outdoor work in all weather conditions is essential.
Your Responsibilities
* Assess, diagnose and determine solutions to reduce leakage, supporting regulatory targets and pinpointing leakage with high accuracy.
* Maintain Health and Safety standards at all times.
* Achieve KPI targets and deliver leakage detection/reduction within DMA’s.
* Attend excavations requested by R&M to assist leak location.
* Train and mentor junior leakage technicians.
* Handle general admin tasks, such as electronic timesheet submissions, weekly vehicle checks and defect reporting.
* Build and maintain excellent relationships with colleagues, contractors and clients.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
* Prior experience in a similar role is beneficial but not required; training will be provided in water network hydraulics, leakage detection techniques, monitoring/reporting of leakage levels and related clean‑water industry issues.
* Willingness to learn utility tracing, noise logging, step‑testing planning/operation and other leakage monitoring, pressure/flow and flow data capture techniques.
* Ability to work well under pressure, meet conflicting deadlines, and maintain detail‑oriented, high‑standard work.
* Team player who solves problems within defined procedures and exhibits flexibility, cooperation and a sharing attitude.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Customer‑focused with excellent relationship‑building ability.
* Quick and accurate reporting of findings.
Qualifications
* Full UK driving licence.
Health & Safety
* Move heavy items, including inspection chamber covers.
* Work in all weather conditions, including night work.
* Potential confined space and highway work.
* Mandatory drug and alcohol tests and a DBS check will be required.
