There is an expectation that candidates will need to undertake OOH duties, which includes being on ‘standby’. This is paid at £30 per weekday and £50 per weekend day, with attendance at properties or service users during OOH paid at x 1.5.
Mears provides temporary accommodation to asylum seekers while their claims are being assessed across three regions: Northeast, Yorkshire and Humber, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. As of May 2021, Mears supported over 19,000 service users. We partner with government bodies, providers, tenants, landlords, and investors to address homelessness, increase social and affordable housing, and create specialized housing for those with care needs.
About the Role:
Due to contract expansion, we are seeking a Welfare Support Officer to join our team. This position focuses on supporting asylum seekers through their right-to-work application process with the Home Office. The ideal candidate will be resilient, trustworthy, caring, empathetic, and excellent at building relationships. The role offers variety and is highly rewarding despite its challenges.
As a Welfare Support Officer, your main duties will include supporting service users at various stages of their asylum application, addressing safeguarding and welfare issues, providing practical and emotional support, monitoring wellbeing, and ensuring accurate record-keeping for Home Office audits. Maintaining boundaries and resilience is essential to deliver professional and effective support tailored to service users’ needs.
Role Criteria:
* Experience working with vulnerable and diverse client groups
* Understanding of safeguarding procedures
* Ability to assess individual and family needs and support packages to maintain independence
* Experience with mental health and challenging behaviors
* Effective communication with colleagues, authorities, and service users
* Record keeping and risk assessment experience
* Ability to work independently
* Resilience
* Supportive, trustworthy, empathetic, approachable, and good listener
* Flexible and willing to travel
* Full UK driving license
Note: All roles require entitlement to work in the UK; Mears does not sponsor visas currently.
As part of the recruitment process, a DBS & BPSS check, security clearance, and proof of identity and residence will be required.
To drive a Mears vehicle, candidates must be over 21, have held a license for over 3 months, and have fewer than 9 points.
