The Department of Earth Sciences and St Peter's College are recruiting an Associate Professor (or Professor) in Earth Surface Processes to join our thriving academic community. The role will start from 1 September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a joint appointment: the person appointed to the position will also be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship at St Peter's College and will be a trustee and member of its Governing Body.

We are looking for an Earth Scientist seeking to understand the record, role and significance of sediments in the past, present, and future of Earth's surface environment through research in fields such as earth surface processes, sedimentary geology, sedimentary and environmental geochemistry, and from those using expertise in a broad range of related disciplines. Related disciplines include, but are not limited to, stratigraphy, palaeontology, mineralogy, geophysics, geochemistry, geomorphology, or tectonics. Possible areas of interest encompass: the role of sediments in weathering and the carbon cycle, sedimentary biogeochemical cycles, renewable energy and the green economy, source-to-sink studies, landscape evolution, modern and ancient carbonate depositional systems, geohazards, and/or evolution of the surface of Earth and other planets through time – but this list is not exhaustive.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in the field of Earth Sciences or a related discipline. The main duties of the post are to carry out research at an international level, to participate in the administration of the department and governance of the college, and to teach, supervise, and examine undergraduate and postgraduate students. Combined University and College salary in range £57,986 - £77,366 p.a. plus additional College pensionable benefits. An allowance of £3,199 p.a. would be payable upon award of Full Professor title.
