Tamworth Borough Council
Executive Director of Communities & Housing
Salary: £103,431
Home working contract with regular in-person leadership presence
Tamworth is a town with bold ambitions and a proud identity. Perfectly placed in the heart of England, it offers the vibrancy of a growing market town with the charm of rich heritage – including the iconic Tamworth Castle – and a community spirit that sets it apart.
We are seeking an exceptional Executive Director of Communities & Housing to join our Corporate Management Team and lead a portfolio that touches the lives of every resident. This role encompasses Housing, Public Realm, Regulatory Services, Community Safety and Partnerships – and is central to our mission of creating safe, healthy and thriving communities. Reporting directly to Chief Executive Stephen Gabriel, this is a rare opportunity to shape the future of Tamworth’s neighbourhoods and deliver meaningful change through improved housing, vibrant public spaces and inclusive wellbeing.
Tamworth Borough Council is known for its delivery, innovation and financial stability. You’ll bring strategic insight and compassionate leadership to a service area that is both complex and deeply personal. From tackling housing need and improving stock quality, to enhancing the public realm and promoting healthier lives, your work will be rooted in the lived experience of our residents. Tamworth’s housing journey is evolving – and your leadership will ensure it continues to meet the needs of today while planning for tomorrow. You’ll build strong partnerships, champion prevention and early intervention, and ensure our communities feel safe, supported and proud of where they live.
This is also a pivotal moment for local government in Staffordshire. With Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) on the horizon, Tamworth is ready to play a leading role in shaping the future unitary landscape. As Executive Director of Communities & Housing, you’ll be at the forefront of this transformation – helping to define what a modern, ambitious and resident-focused authority looks like in a new governance model. It’s a unique opportunity to influence not just Tamworth’s future, but the future of local government across the region.
We welcome applications from experienced Directors or ambitious Assistant Directors ready to take their first step into a role at this level. You’ll bring a track record of success in one or more of the service areas within the remit, and a collaborative, resident-focused approach that puts people and place at the heart of everything you do.
Tamworth is well-connected via the West Coast Mainline and motorway network, making it an attractive opportunity for candidates across the UK. We offer a flexible working culture, with a home working contract and the expectation of visible leadership in the office and at key meetings (including evenings).
Now is an exciting time to join us and be part of a close-knit, passionate team that’s proud of Tamworth and committed to shaping what comes next.
