Job Description
As a Principal Civil Asset Consultant in our Special Services team, you will join and help lead a multidisciplinary team that includes civil, structural and geotechnical engineers, structural analysts, materials engineers, data analysts and information and asset management specialists. We work on projects across the full lifecycle of civil engineering assets in the UK road, rail, water and energy sectors, including tunnels, bridges, retaining walls, culverts, piers and jetties, geotechnical and drainage assets. We contribute to the design of new assets and advise on the management of existing assets through data collection and analysis, investigations, testing and assessment, and the development of asset management processes and tools.
Job Profile
Our Special Services team is recruiting for a Principal Civil/Structural Asset Consultant to join us, working principally from our Croydon, Sheffield or Birmingham offices. We help major UK infrastructure owners such as Network Rail and Highways England to develop technical solutions and optimise asset value, supporting their organisational goals. Our projects are varied; for example, we are currently:
* Working with the Physical Laboratory (NPL) to develop an automated asset inspection system based on computer vision and automated defect recognition and classification algorithms;
* Writing industry best practice guidance on civil engineering asset management and new technologies for investigating structures;
* Investigating ageing structures, including tunnels, bridges, culverts and jetties, to understand condition, capacity and future deterioration, and develop options for extending service life;
* Developing data-driven deterioration models, risk assessment and asset management processes for structures and geotechnical assets on the UK rail and road networks;
* Updating Highways' online GIS-based management system for their geotechnical and drainage assets, a system we originally created and have managed since the early 2000s.
This is an opportunity to be part of a cross-disciplinary team with expertise across civil and structural engineering, materials technology, geotechnical engineering, data and asset management, and analytics. We are problem-solvers by nature, constantly seeking new challenges. Our diverse backgrounds and skills enable us to take on technically demanding, varied work in civil engineering. We challenge established methods and solve problems by using first principles, applying new technologies, and collaborating with external innovators on R&D projects.
As a senior member, you will be responsible for the creation, technical leadership and management of projects that include developing strategies, plans, processes and tools for managing risk and optimising asset value. You will apply your engineering knowledge to solve problems and deliver client requirements, ensuring practical, deliverable work that adds value within the wider context of our clients’ businesses. You will consider how civil engineering assets perform as part of larger infrastructure systems.
Responsibilities
* Guide and support the development of the technical capabilities of the team, line management and mentoring of individuals, and maintain high professional and technical standards.
* Develop and grow sound relationships with external and internal clients, understand their needs, and support their businesses by providing our services.
* Develop and scope solutions in response to invitations to tender and other opportunities; prepare and review proposals including technical and commercial aspects.
* Manage and lead the technical and commercial aspects of projects, taking responsibility for delivery and performance.
* Produce, check and review technical deliverables to ensure client needs, quality standards and contracted obligations are met.
* Support innovation and use of technology to enhance delivery, efficiency and quality of our work and services.
Candidate Specification
The role would suit someone with sound civil/structural engineering technical and problem-solving skills, interested in applying them to a diverse portfolio of projects. You should be keen on new developments and technologies in civil engineering and asset management, enjoy challenge, and be comfortable in a technical environment across asset types and materials. You will have strong interpersonal, influencing, presentation and report-writing skills, and be comfortable coordinating input from colleagues with different skillsets. You should have experience in leading or contributing as part of multi-disciplinary teams, client engagement, and project management. You will have previously managed small teams of engineers and mentored or trained others.
You will have experience planning, executing and interpreting inspections and investigations of civil engineering assets, appraising their condition and performance, and developing strategies and designs for enhancement and life-extension. You will be familiar with asset management principles and understand the needs of asset-owning clients to ensure practical and valuable solutions.
You will also be able to demonstrate the following:
* A degree or postgraduate degree (2.1+ or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or another STEM subject
* Chartered with a relevant professional institution (ICE, IStructE, IET or similar)
* Experience in inspection, investigation, monitoring and assessment of civil structures, understanding how they perform, deteriorate and fail, and how they can be protected, maintained and repaired
* Good interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and build relationships with clients and peers
Additional desirable skills and experience
* Specialist knowledge of managing civil engineering assets in infrastructure sectors (e.g., transport, utilities, energy, defence)
* Developing asset management plans and strategies for assets or groups of assets
* Applied research, development and use of technology to gather and analyse data
* Working with asset data to create models and practical tools for asset management and decision-making
