Senior/Principal Consultant - Surface Water Quality

Join WSP as a Senior/Principal Consultant in Surface Water Quality. In this role you will be part of our rapidly expanding Water Quality and Catchment Management team, delivering sustainable solutions to the water sector and environmental regulators in the UK and helping protect the water environment.


Key responsibilities

* Water quality data analysis, conceptualisation and visualisation and clear communication;
* Carrying out desk‑based investigations and interpretation of datasets;
* Helping to design field monitoring campaigns, including traditional and non‑traditional approaches;
* Delivery of technical reports and presentations to clients;
* Winning new work and writing proposals for new projects;
* Project and task management;
* Being a key member of our water quality team in Sustainable Water Management.


Required qualifications and experience

* Background in earth sciences with working knowledge of water quality and geochemistry / environmental chemistry.
* Awareness of UK regulatory framework: WFD, EIA scoping, reviews and assessments.
* Working knowledge of water quality modelling tools (SAGIS SIMCAT, InfoWorks, ICM, etc.).
* Experience in water environment data collation, quality checking, assurance and interpretation.
* Experience with water quality permitting and completion or review of H1 and RQP assessments.
* Understanding of how to conceptualise a water quality problem and knowledge of available datasets for problem solving.
* Ability to interrogate time‑series and spatial datasets, strong conceptualisation skills and clear communication through writing and visualisations.
* Awareness of groundwater and surface water interactions.
* Field experience: sampling‑network design, risk assessment before field work, data collation and interpretation (river and/or groundwater sampling and monitoring).
* Some knowledge of catchment management / agri‑environment schemes.
* Degree level qualifications in a relevant subject (geography, geology, geochemistry, earth/environmental science, civil engineering, etc.). A higher degree is desirable but not essential.
* Excellent analytical skills and proficiency with MS Office tools (Word, Teams, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and GIS packages such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
* Effective teamwork and independent working capability;
* Excellent communication skills, both written and visual.


About the team

Our Sustainable Water Management team covers water quality and catchment management, water resources and security, hydrology and hydraulics, geomorphology, hydroecology and hydrogeology. We provide high‑quality technical services and advice to high‑profile customers across the UK and overseas, including government departments, the water industry, and industrial sectors such as power, transport, nuclear, mining, commercial and oil and gas.
