Job overview

We are looking for enthusiastic people with previous experience working in an NHS histopathology laboratory as a band or band biomedical support worker to work as an Associate Practitioner in our large Cellular Pathology department,

The post holder will undertake the required duties to support the histology team in the processing of tissue samples for microscopical diagnosis. The role will include supervising and training biomedical support workers and performing the pre-analytical processing of samples received. You will undertake manual and automated processes requiring a high level of manual dexterity and concentration.

To be considered for the post applicants should hold, as a minimum, one of the following: a science foundation degree, Diploma in Laboratory Science or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as a Non-Registered Laboratory Scientist assisting in the provision of an efficient and smooth running diagnostic Histopathology service.

Participating in all laboratory support tasks as required to ensure patient samples are processed quickly, accurately and safely.

1. tissue embedding
2. cutting tissue sections (microtomy)
3. assisting during tissue dissection
4. specimen reception
5. digital scanning
6. general laboratory duties - maintaining tissue processors, staining machines, stock levels. These duties require manual handling of litre containers of liquid, use of fume cabinets and movement of Kg boxes / containers
7. maintaining slide and block files
8. Maintaining post mortem block and slide files in line with HTA requirements
9. Collating slides for MDTs and limited clerical tasks if required
