Field Service Engineer (Hardware) – Full Time
Location: Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff, Wales (with travel across the UK for training and on-the-job development)
Join Varian (a Siemens Healthineers company) as a dedicated Field Service Engineer supporting the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff and its satellite site in Abergavenny. You will play a critical role in keeping life‑saving radiotherapy systems operating at their best while receiving extensive training and developing your career within a highly supportive UK service team.
What You’ll Be Doing
Technical Excellence
* Provide on‑site technical support, servicing, and maintenance of Varian hardware systems.
* Troubleshoot, repair, install, upgrade, and perform preventative maintenance on complex radiotherapy equipment following established procedures and quality standards.
* Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, and software issues on advanced accelerator systems.
Customer & Service Support
* Act as a trusted technical partner to clinical teams, building strong relationships through clear and professional communication.
* Support customers both on‑site and remotely via Varian’s Helpdesk when not scheduled on‑site.
* Manage service cases efficiently while balancing planned maintenance, installations, and urgent call‑outs.
On‑Call & Coverage
* Participate in a 7‑day on‑call rota, including evenings and weekends, with appropriate shift allowances.
* Provide out‑of‑hours support as part of the UK‑wide service coverage model.
Learning & Development
* Travel across the UK for structured training, shadowing, and development with experienced Field Service Engineers (company car and travel allowance provided).
* Complete Varian training programmes on TrueBeam and Halcyon systems, progressing toward VMS HW Level II and Imaging Level II certifications.
Qualifications & Experience
* HNC/HND, Associate Degree, technical/vocational qualification, or military training in electronics (preferred).
* 2–5 years’ experience in servicing complex electronic or electro‑mechanical systems.
* Strong working knowledge of PC‑based systems and microcomputers, high voltage (HV) and radio frequency (RF) systems, electrical, mechanical and software troubleshooting.

* Flexible, reliable, and comfortable responding to urgent service needs.
* Able to work independently while collaborating closely with the wider UK service team.
* Strong time‑management and organisational skills.
* A genuine eagerness to learn and develop deep technical expertise in Varian systems.
Practical Requirements
* Must live within close proximity to one of the Velindre sites.
* Willingness to travel for training and development.
