Job Summary
Salus Ward is a newly developed 16-bed mixed gender acute mental health ward for working age adults. It has been designed to maximise space and light to create an open, safe and welcoming environment. Haytor Ward is a 16-bed acute ward providing care for adults with mental health needs and is co-located with Salus and Beech Ward within the Torbay General Hospital site. This centre includes adult inpatient wards, an older adults inpatient ward, a psychiatric liaison service, outpatient services and Home Treatment Team base.

Responsibilities
* To assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate individual care plans.
* To provide named nurse role to people who use our service.
* To promote and improve quality of service provided.
* To manage the unit in the absence of Ward Manager / Team Leader.
* To participate in the internal rotation system including weekend working.
Duties and Responsibilities
* To be a proactive, skilled member of the ward Multidisciplinary team.
* To have knowledge and experience of providing individual and group clinical/therapy work.
* To demonstrate effective leadership and assist with providing advice and guidance to non-qualified staff and students.
* To be responsible for the provision and maintenance of effective therapeutic relationships, which at all times acknowledge the rights, personal dignity and encourage growth and development of the person using this service.
* To provide cross cover to other mental health units located on the same site when there is a clinical need.
* To work in line with safeguarding protocols at all times.
* Actively engage in required training.
* To demonstrate working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 (including 2007 updates), Mental Capacity Act 2005 (including Deprivation of Liberty safeguards), Care Programme Approach, and NHS and Community Care Act 1990.
* To work to NICE and NMC Guidelines and Standards.
* To be aware of and work in line with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
Communication & Working Relationships
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Proficient in the use of electronic systems.
* Maintain professional working relationships with other members of the MDT.
* Liaise with carers, families and user groups and representatives.
* Liaise with a range of professionals and agencies allied to the holistic care of the person using the service (e.g., GP, Social Worker, Housing).
Planning & Organisation
* Act as shift co-ordinator.
* Act up (take responsibility for the ward) in the absence of Manager as required.
* Supervise others in line with Trust policy.
Patient Care, Treatment & Therapy
* To act as named nurse for a cohort of patients.
* To assess complex health and wellbeing needs, develop, monitor and review care plans to meet individual needs and update records on RiO (electronic records).
* To provide robust risk assessments and ensure they are updated on RiO.
* To maintain professionalism and ensure safe practice in line with NMC, Government and Trust policies/procedures.
* Maintain accurate documentation using the correct recording systems (mostly electronic).
Policy, Service, Research & Development
* Be aware of national and professional developments.
* Participate in ongoing training and education progress.
* Demonstrate evidence-based practice and participate in research/audit/pilot projects.
* Be aware of current initiatives in inpatient care.
* Promote service changes with a positive professional attitude and engage in service changes.
Finance, Equipment & Other Resources
* Follow Trust policies and procedures in relation to handling monies, property etc belonging to people using the service.
* Demonstrate effective risk management skills.
* Use Trust resources in a sustainable, cost-effective and appropriate way.
Supervision, Leadership & Management
* Demonstrate and develop effective leadership/management skills.
* Provide supervision and appraisals to appropriate staff. Mentor students where appropriate.
* Participate as a preceptor for newly qualified staff where appropriate.
* Participate in audits.
* Support learners on a regular basis with ongoing professional development.
Information Resources & Administrative Duties
* Ensure accurate documentation.
* Have working knowledge of RiO and associated systems.
* Engage with electronic recording systems and training as required.
* Contribute to reports for professionals such as panels for continuing care.
Other Tasks
* Demonstrate working knowledge of NMC codes of conduct and comply with them.
* Understand government health and social care policy.
* Be aware of PREP requirements and maintain personal, professional development.
* Report any incident of unprofessional behaviour, accident/incident, untoward occurrence or faulty equipment to Ward Manager/Team Leader.
* Take an active role in supervision and CPD.
Person Specification
Knowledge
* Essential: Knowledge of ordering, storing and administering medications and knowledge of possible side effects of medications.
* Essential: Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 (including updates).
* Essential: Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act & Deprivation of Liberty safeguards.
* Desirable: Understanding Recovery principles in Mental Health and safeguarding guidance.
Qualifications
* Essential: RMN/ Registered Nurse (Mental Health) with current registration. Willingness to complete Trust Mandatory Courses and relevant Physical Interventions training where required.
Experience
* Essential: Experience of Adult and/or Older Persons mental health nursing and the nursing process.
* Desirable: Experience of working with people with a diagnosis of dementia.
Skills & Abilities
* Ability to form positive therapeutic relationships with service users, carers and other professionals.
* Ability to assess situations, make decisions, coordinate and organise appropriate responses.
* Ability to conduct risk assessments and plan nursing care accordingly.
