The role of Metallurgical Technician is to provide an accurate assessment of both metallurgical and mechanical properties, from which customer reports/certificates can be generated.
The assessments relative to this position require experience using metallographic techniques, and destructive testing methods to prescribed international standards. Attention to detail and a fastidious approach to working is paramount, as the role necessitates a variety of over-checks and cross-examinations, reaffirming ‘right first time’ methodology, and accuracy in reporting of data.

The Role
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Reporting to the Shift Team Leader, the job holder will be required to:
8. Undertake a variety of tests that include metallographic and mechanical techniques, providing test results to the highest standard to both internal and external customers.
9. Support investigations from other business functions (Forensic Metallurgy, Research & Development, etc.)
10. Assist in maintaining compliance to standards and retention of existing accreditations.
11. Ensure that SPC’s are maintained within area of responsibility
12. As a site that demonstrates an active, and inclusive Health & Safety ethos, you will be required to engage with local Health and Safety teams/departments. Continued development of health and safety knowledge and awareness will be delivered through digital and in-person training packages.
13. You will ensure that safe working practices are always adhered to, while testing materials, ensuring they conform to prescribed international and customer standards and order requirements.
Required
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
The jobholder is ideally educated to HNC level or equivalent in Metallurgy / Materials with relevant work experience gained within a steel works environment. Must be able to use MS Office applications confidently
Proven knowledge and experience of metallurgical testing/assessment, to include, but not limited to:
14. Grain size (ASTM E -comparison and Intersect method).
15. Cleanness (ASTM E45 and DIN ).
16. Decarburisation (ASTM E).
17. Structure assessment (SEP, ASTM E (desirable).
18. Etchant types, use, and production.
19. Tensile testing (Multiple ISO and ASTM standards covering, straight bar, strip, and full-section tensile testing).
20. Hardness testing (ISO and ASTM covering, Vickers, Rockwell (B & C Scales), and Brinell).
21. Impact Testing (Charpy to ISO, ASTM E23, ASTM A, & Izod to BS )
22. Bend Testing (ISO, Preferred, but not a requirement).
23. Show understanding and have the ability to recognize steel structures.
24. The job holder shall have previous experience of SPC’s and able to address/escalate instances or trends which may result in loss of control.
