University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a key role in the Aseptic Unit. This position is integral to delivering safe, effective, and patient‑centred aseptic pharmacy services, supporting the day‑to‑day running, ensuring high‑quality product provision and regulatory compliance.
As an experienced and accredited technician, you will coordinate workload, allocate tasks, and ensure priorities are met in a busy environment. You will mentor junior staff and contribute to their development through training and guidance. You will actively contribute to continuous improvement of the aseptic service by identifying opportunities and supporting SOP reviews and implementations, working collaboratively with pharmacists, technicians, and support workers.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise and coordinate day‑to‑day activities within the Aseptic Unit, ensuring effective organisation and prioritisation to meet service demands.
* Ensure safe preparation and supply of aseptic products by maintaining GMP standards, adhering to cleanroom procedures, and conducting final accuracy checks.
* Serve as a role model, demonstrating high professional standards and best practices in aseptic services.
* Support development of junior staff through training, mentoring, and constructive feedback.
* Participate in recruitment, induction, and ongoing competency assessment of staff within the unit.
Experience and Skills Required
* Registered Pharmacy Technician or Science Manufacturing Technician with an accredited accuracy‑checking qualification.
* Proven experience supervising or supporting junior staff, with strong communication skills to deliver clear guidance, training, and feedback.
* Ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks, and solve problems in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining high professional standards.
* Excellent teamwork skills, with ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining quality and safety in all aspects of work.
Qualifications and Training Required – Essential Criteria
* Registered pharmacy technician in the UK (GPhC) or registered Science Manufacturing Technician (Apprenticeship Standard – Level 3 Diploma in the Principles of Aseptic Pharmaceuticals Processing) by the Science Council.
* Numerate and literate (e.g., GCSE in Maths and English A* to C or equivalent; or IELTS 7 if overseas).
* One of the following additional qualifications: Accredited Checking PT (ACPT), Pre and In Processing Checking (PIPC), medicine management accreditation, TAQA assessor, CIPS level 4, foundation management or equivalent experience in day‑to‑day operational management of staff and workload.
* Experience supervising operational workload.
Qualifications and Training Required – Desirable Criteria
* Completion of Practice Supervisor Programme or equivalent.
* Additional pharmacy qualifications such as Completed APTUK Foundation Framework, Foundation Management, or other recognised management qualification or demonstrable management experience (TAQA Medicines Management, PIPC, ACPT, CIPS level 4).
Previous or Relevant Experience – Essential Criteria
* Accurate dispensing of medicines (in hospital or community pharmacy or aseptics).
* Maintaining continuous professional development portfolio.
* Experience dealing with customers/patients.
Previous or Relevant Experience – Desirable Criteria
* Hospital pharmacy experience.
* Stock control/ordering experience.
* Experience with JAC or similar computer labelling/ordering system.
* Experience relevant to role, e.g., providing ward‑based medicines management service, clinical trials or research experience, or aseptic services experience.
