Main Duties of the Job
* Work independently with students to provide intensive occupational therapy input.
* Collaborate with education, residential and other therapists.
* Hold responsibility for assessment, intervention planning and evaluation within own caseload.
* Develop and maintain professional standards through CPD and other developmental activities.
* Supervise the work of occupational therapy assistants.
* Provide observation sessions for visiting professionals and students.
Job Responsibilities
* Working Relationships – Excellent communication skills are essential to interact with students, parents/carers, health professionals, education professionals, social services, voluntary services, the public and other stakeholders.
* Financial and Physical Resources – Monitor stock levels, request new equipment, and ensure the security, care and maintenance of equipment.
* Working Conditions – Maintain intense concentration during student assessment and therapy, be flexible to meet competing demands, manage potentially distressing situations, and engage in moderate physical effort when required.
* Clinical Practice – Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate occupational therapy interventions for students with sensory, motor and functional needs. Ensure student involvement in goal setting, apply sound clinical judgement, adapt practice to individual circumstances, and provide detailed written reports.
* Leadership – Supervise assistants, students and volunteers; manage and prioritise own workload; support the development of others and contribute to the effective organisation of the occupational therapy service.
* Professional Development – Identify personal and professional development needs, participate actively in clinical and management supervision, attend relevant training, maintain HCPC and RCOT registration, and reflect on practice.
* Teaching/Training/Research – Participate in departmental audit and research projects, and deliver training to others in occupational therapy practice.
* Policy and Service Development – Adhere to national and local policies (SEN, safeguarding, child protection), participate in service/policy developments, and contribute to innovations in risk management and quality standards.
* Admin/Monitoring/Auditing – Maintain accurate case notes, share information while observing data protection guidelines, gather activity data, participate in surveys and audits, and undertake other duties as required by the line manager.
Person Specification – Qualifications
* Recognised Occupational Therapy degree or equivalent.
* HCPC registered licence to practice.
* Registered Member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
* Within the first 3 years post‑qualification.
* Paediatric placements completed.
* Evidence of knowledge of motor and sensory impairments and associated difficulties.
* Understanding of partnership working with parents and other professionals.
* Knowledge of common assessment tools and therapeutic interventions.
* Understanding of special education needs and related policies.
* Good organisational, time‑management, analytical and reflective skills.
* Experience in general paediatric occupational therapy and an education setting.
* Teamworking ability and membership of relevant special interest groups.

Salary
£32,073 to £39,043 per year – may go to Band 6 depending on experience.
