About the Role
We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for motivated and compassionate nurses or midwives to train as Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (School Nurse). This apprentice School Nurse post provides a structured pathway into the School Nursing profession, combining academic study with supervised practice in community settings.
You will join a supportive and experienced team committed to helping you develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to qualify as a Band 6 School Nurse.

Main Duties
* Participate in all elements of the SCPHN apprenticeship programme, both theory and practice, and ensure completion of all approved programme documentation and assessments within the required timeframe.
* Organise planned tripartite and bipartite meetings with your Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor.
* Fully participate in the teaching strategies used by the Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor.
* Develop professional knowledge and competence in School Nursing, ensuring adherence to safe standards of professional practice.
* Accurately record information within systmOne, ensuring timely, contemporary documentation as per trust policy.
* Maintain confidentiality at all times, safeguarding electronic access as per trust policy.
* Under the supervision of your Practice Assessor or Supervisor manage delegated workload/caseload and supervise staff where appropriate.
* Undertake nursing and public health duties under direct and indirect supervision of your Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor.
* Act in accordance with all Trust policies.
Progression to Band 6
Upon successful completion of the SCPHN apprenticeship programme and achievement of professional registration, you will be eligible to be offered a Band 6 School Nurse post. Band 6 posts are allocated based on available vacancies across the geographical region and may not be in the same locality where you trained.
Training Contract
This is a fixed‑term training post for the duration of the apprentice SCPHN programme. You are required to complete all academic and practice‑based elements within the University cohort timescales. Any extensions will be managed in line with NHSE policy for funding extensions and in collaboration with the Trust and the University.
Failure to complete the programme within the agreed timescales will result in the fixed‑term contract ending at the conclusion of the training period; you then will not be eligible for a Band 6 SCPHN post or for any future employment with the Trust through the standard recruitment process.
Training Requirements
* Registered Nurse or Midwife on Part 1 or 2 of the NMC register.
* Degree at 2:2 or above.
* English and Maths at grade C or level 4, or key skill level 2 in both.
* Resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the course start date in September (unless exempt).
Salary
£32,073 to £48,117 a year; apprenticeship salary will be in line with apprenticeship rules. If taking the apprentice route and currently working under Agenda for Change, you remain on your current salary and continue accruing your increment.

Knowledge
* Knowledge of current Public Health agenda.

Qualifications
* First degree at 2:2 or above.
* Evidence of post‑registration study.
* Maths and English GCSE grade C/4 or above / Functional skills level 2 / International equivalent (must provide certificate).
* Teaching qualification.
* Teaching qualification (APEL – Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning).
