The Respiratory Physiology department is seeking to appoint our new Chief Respiratory Physiologist on a permanent, full-time basis. You will act as the team lead in the provision of our service at the CDC and the wider community, both supporting junior colleagues and providing training as necessary and working autonomously and demonstrating best practice.
This post is ideal for Respiratory Physiologists with significant experience looking to take the next step in their career into a leadership role, or for those currently working at the same level looking for a change of scenery.
Main duties of the job
* Perform full lung function testing safely and in-line with guidelines
* To perform the following: spirometry, gas transfer single breath method (carbon monoxide), static lung volumes nitrogen washout and body plethysmography, bronchodilator response testing (salbutamol) and shuttle walk tests.
* Undertake expert analysis and clinical interpretation of test results and provide expert clinical care
* To identify and where possible, rectify equipment faults/malfunctions
* Take basic height and weight measurements explain the nature of the tests and reassure patients. To confirm patient’s suitability for the test by clarifying recent medical history and checking for contraindications to the tests requested.
* To communicate complex information, which may be sensitive and/or contentious, to patients and their carers regarding the outcomes of a range of test results within pulmonary function testing
* To perform respiratory diagnostic tests to nationally recognized standards for accuracy and quality.
* Follow consistently high standards of infection control practice, especially with reference to hand decontamination. Be aware of and follow all Trust infection control guidelines and procedures relevant to their work
* Ensure that physiologists are following protocols correctly and are providing timely and accurate analysis
* Lead on the production of the monthly divisional performance report for business meeting

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Day-to-day management of data systems and their back-up for lung function testing within the Information Governance Framework.
* To implement local and national policies, codes of practice and guidelines in clinical areas for best practice of measurement, assessment and application
of therapeutic regimens and where appropriate, new developments within the
field of Sleep Diagnostics as directed by the Healthcare Scientist Professional
Manager and Consultant Clinical Scientist.
* To develop and implement, in conjunction with the Healthcare Scientist
Professional Manager and Consultant Clinical Scientist, new and innovative
ways of working to improve efficiency and productivity of the services.
* Propose changes to and the implementation of new policies and procedures
within the lung function service in adults, which may impact across the Trust.
* Plans day-to-day activities for staff and service provision within the Lung
Function Services (Adults).
* Liaise with reception staff to ensure smooth running of the lung function clinics
in adults.
* Ensure correct and up to date information is entered onto Trust and
departmental databases for the purposes of audit and research.
* Take part in research and audit studies within the department as requested by the Service Manager, Nurse Lead and Consultant Physician
