Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (+ Electrical background), United Kingdom
An experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (electro-mechanical electrical / mechanical engineer) is urgently required to be part of a growing R&D team for a novel technology STEM organisation. As a senior mechanical design engineer, you will use your mechanical design engineering and electrical expertise to lead and develop new system designs (equipment / machinery) concepts and technology solutions from idea through to commercially viable solutions for the business.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead mechanical & electrical engineering activities to support the detailed design and development of machinery / systems equipment.
* Support communication with internal teams (specifically the US team) and contracted engineers to create functional solutions to project requirements.
* Work with suppliers on the design, manufacture, and delivery of production line components.
* Lead prototyping and design verification testing to support design & development, optimization, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
* Design and implement approaches to design verification, prototyping, materials selection, and testing.
* Integrate new technologies into production lines and new product development, including fault-finding and system improvements.
* Assist with the design, development, and operation of the company's existing UK pilot line.
* Collaborate with other science and engineering skillsets to optimize manufacturability, cost, and quality.
Qualifications and Experience
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
* Excellent understanding of commercial mechanical systems and future technology trends.
* Experience with machinery such as gasifiers, incinerators, chemical reactors, fluidized bed reactors, torrefaction units, thermal crackers, and pyrolysis units.
* Knowledge of mechanical engineering standards: BoM structure, drawings, safety requirements, machinery directives, CE, ATEX, HAZOP, P&ID, flow diagrams, PLC logic, documentation.
* Experience with mechanical systems like gearboxes, motors, drives, ductwork, pumps, heat exchangers, instrumentation.
* Electrical systems knowledge: cables, drives, PLC, automation systems like Wonderware, web controls.
* Proficient in CAD software, ideally SolidWorks & Navisworks.
* Experience in drafting electrical and mechanical drawings (P&IDs, flow diagrams, electrical diagrams).
* Hands-on prototype development and validation experience.
* Experience managing external partners and understanding project timelines.
* Familiarity with ISO 9001, machinery in explosive environments (ATEX), HAZOPs, and industrial standards (ISO, IEC, ASME/ASTM).
* Knowledge of machinery control systems, including PLC/HMI, motors, VFDs.
* Understanding of EPC document processes.
